Lights, camera, nostalgia: Orchard Street goes back to the 1950s for Timothée Chalamet film

While Avenue A is getting a late 1990s look for Darren Aronofsky's "Caught Stealing," parts of the Lower East Side are returning to the '50s.

Longtime EVG reader Matt Geo LES shared these photos from Orchard Street between Rivington and Delancey...
The storefronts are the backdrop for Josh Safdie's film "Marty Supreme," which stars Timothée Chalamet as American table tennis champion Marty Reisman.

The eclectic cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler the Creator, Abel Ferrara and Penn Jillette.

And the plot, per Deadline
While details of the film are being kept under wraps, it will be based loosely on Reisman's life. Known for his unconventional style, he won two U.S. Men's Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles.

'Gossip Girl' is filming today xoxo

Crews are out today to film scenes for the HBO Max version of "Gossip Girl" ...  so expect to see some lights, cameras, trucks and action nearby along streets that include Bond between the Bowery and Lafayette.

This will be for season 2 of the standalone series to the CW version (2007-2012).

As you likely know, several unresolved storylines hang in the balance after Season 1. What can we expect from Audrey, Aki and Max's new relationship? How will Zoya fare making new friends away from Julien? And what of the possible Kate-Julien collaboration? Feel free to leave your thoughts on the EVG GG LiveJournal!

Anyway, lots of handwashing options for the cast and crew... photo by Derek Berg.

Updated:

The filming is for "Tick, Tick... Boom!" — a musical drama film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda based on the semi-autobiographical musical of the same name by Jonathan Larson. The cast includes Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, Judith Light and Bradley Whitford.

'The Deuce' is back in town

Crews for the HBO series "The Deuce" are setting up shop today for filming tomorrow... look for trucks, equipment and cast members along Avenue A between Houston and Fourth Street (and various side streets) and Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

The series, now in its second season, chronicles "the birth of the modern pornography business in New York City in the early 1970s," as Variety put it.

"The Deuce" has filmed around the neighbor in the past ... here and here, for instance.

For a limited time only, catch the J/Z on 9th and C

[Thanks to Alexandra Story for this photo!]

Thanks to the magic of TV pilot making, there's now a J/Z stop for the Bowery on Ninth Street at Avenue C...

And across the Avenue, A & C Kitchen is standing in for the Avenue C Deli (signs include a double cheeseburger for $6.50 and Molten Velvet in concert)...

As previously mentioned, crews for the CBS pilot "God Friended Me" will be filming along Avenue C and side streets today and tomorrow.

Here's one more shot, via Salim, showing the arrival of the J/Z stop this morning...

'God' willing, this CBS pilot will be filming on Avenue C the next 2 days

Crews for a CBS pilot called "God Friended Me" will be filming on parts of Avenue C and Avenue D between Eighth Street and 13th Street tomorrow and Tuesday...

Here's the plot via Deadline Hollywood:

"God Friended Me" is described as a humorous, uplifting series that explores questions of faith, existence and science. It centers on Miles (Brandon Micheal Hall), an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he is “friended” by God on Facebook. Unwittingly, he becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him.

Violett Beane will play Cara Weiss. Confident, compelling and quick-witted, Cara is a leading writer at an online magazine. Under pressure for her next big story, her life takes an interesting turn when she meets Miles — thanks to God’s friend suggestion. The cast also includes Suraj Sharma, Javicia Leslie and Joe Morton.

Rejected headlines:
Oh 'God' — another film shoot!

Why in 'God''s name would CBS order this pilot?

Post-'Pose' tree damage on 4th Street

Crews for the upcoming series "Pose" have decamped from Fourth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B, where they were filming for parts of Nov. 28 through Wednesday.

An EVG reader on the block shared this photo ... noting that one of the production trucks was responsible for damaging this tree...

As for "Pose," the show is via Ryan Murphy, whose credits include "Nip/Tuck" and "American Horror Story."

Per Deadline:

Set in 1986, Pose examines the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York City: the emergence of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.

You Gotti be kidding me: Mobster biopic pulled 10 days before release

Back in February, crews were out on 10th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue filming scenes for "Gotti," the biopic starring John Travolta, seen above, in the title role.

"Gotti," directed by "Entourage" star Kevin Connolly, was set to open on Dec. 15.

Not anymore. The Tracking Board reports that Lionsgate dropped the film from its schedule and sold it back to its producers. There isn't any word on why Lionsgate decided to drop "Gotti."

Insiders say that "Gotti" would have given 10th Street its meatiest role since "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" filmed between Second Avenue and Third Avenue in 2005.

Turning Rutherford Place into 1987 Russia

EVG regular Dan Efram shared this from Wednesday evening...

A crew of approximately 75 people worked on FX's television series "The Americans."

Filmed just north of the East Village outside of St. George's Episcopal Church on Rutherford Place at 16th Street, this wintery scene taking place in 1987 Russia included actor Lev Gorn passing a briefcase to an unidentifiable moving actor as they walked south. Two timely Russian automobiles were a big part of the red-hued eye candy.

The return of the WASP

[On the Bowery]

You've probably seen the many No Parking-filming notices on parts of Sixth Street and Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue... and on the Bowery for WASP2017...

[7th Street]

WASP2017 is short for Woody Allen's Summer Project, a still-untitled movie starring Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schrieber, among many others. Crews will be filming in parts of the East Village today and tomorrow.

Last year, Allen filmed a few scenes for "Wonder Wheel" around here ... and in 2009, he was here shooting "Whatever Works" with Larry David.

This has nothing to do with a new LinkNYC kiosk

That toppled telephone booth is just a film prop... Crews are dressing up the front of 94 St. Mark's Place this afternoon... the filming here (and elsewhere) is for the Amazon series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," a dramedy written and directed by "Gilmore Girls" creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino.

The show stars "House of Cards" alum Rachel Brosnahan as a 1958 New York City housewife "who, through a series of events, winds up exploring the world of stand-up comedy."

Scenes for the pilot episode were filmed last fall at 7B/Vazac's/Horseshoe Bar.
