Bombed again at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

Maya Hayuk's nearly two-week-old criss-cross mural up on the wall at East Houston and the Bowery was hit for the second time…

Her mural was tagged just two days after completion, as BoweryBoogie noted.

Apparently all this happened during Thursday night's snowstorm, per AnimalNY.

Criss-crossing East Houston...

Well, we've done a lousy job documenting the latest mural up on the wall at East Houston and the Bowery … where this past week the Brooklyn-based artist Maya Hayuk created some vibrant patterns… these photos are from yesterday … hopefully no one tagged the wall again…

Looking at Swoon's bombed Hurricane Sandy-inspired mural on the Bowery wall

This happened back during the snowstorm on Jan. 2 into Jan. 3, as AnimalNY first pointed out… hadn't seen it ourselves… and wanted to note it as well…

Graffiti writer PIXOTE marked the wall some 30 feet above the mural back at the end of December.

Swoon at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

Well, we've done a lousy job of documenting Swoon's Hurricane Sandy mural that went up this week at the Bowery Wall... and it is likely our favorite mural in recent memory here...

There'll be an official dedication on Tuesday, Sandy's one-year anniversary...

The colorful new landscape at Houston and the Bowery

Well, we've done a lousy job this time around with documenting the new art up on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall. Well, here it is. REVOK and POSE started the work on June 25.

BoweryBoogie has been covering the ongoing work. As he noted, the mural "is a colorful collage of comic book stylings that doubles as a memorial mural. REVOK and POSE pay tribute to fallen street artists like Nekst, IZ, and Dondi."

You can find more shots of the mural in progress at The Lo-Down, Animal New York and 12ozProphet.

And here's one more shot with some kind of "Pop Art" camera filter... not that this wall needs any more color...

And we'll stop by for another shot ... now that those lifts are gone...

Nothing Wimpy about Crash's Popeye mural

Crash has finished his work on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall ...

And perhaps my favorite mural here in some time. You?

Find more photos from yesterday afternoon at Animal NY.

P.S.
Sorry about that headline. It's really bad.

Late-afternoon Popeye break

An update on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall, where Crash continues his work... He told Animal NY that he should be done on Saturday... check out more photos at Animal NY here.

Popeye ready to flex his muscles on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

As we noted yesterday, Crash was expected to start work on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall... you can see above how it was looking by the end of the afternoon... You can make out the familiar form of Popeye taking shape...

BoweryBoogie has some photos from yesterday showing the work in progress... Animal NY has photos and coverage here ... Per Animal, Crash (aka John Matos) "is not only a pioneer of graffiti on subway trains, but also graffiti on canvasses. In 1980, he curated the first graffiti exhibit at Fashion Moda in the Bronx and has painted with the best of the best."

Crash expected at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

On Saturday, a handful of graffiti artists quickly put up a tribute to legendary street photography Martha Cooper in honor of her 70th birthday. Brooklyn Street Art said that the tribute would be up for "an incredibly short time, possibly only days" on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall.

Very true. A tipster told us that Crash (aka John Matos), one of the artists who worked on the Marty tribute, starts a new mural here today.

There's something about Marty

Here's the completed work at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall, which was unveiled yesterday at noon ... a surprise to honor legendary graffiti photographer Martha Cooper's 70th birthday.

A growing number of graffiti artists started the tribute yesterday morning at 7. Cooper arrived with her cousin at noon, thinking that she was going to be seeing a new mural — something other than her nickname on the wall.

Brooklyn Street Art has a lot more about the event... with photos and names of everyone who collaborated on the work.

Per BSA:

The brand new “Marty” mural is up for an incredibly short time, possibly only days, so if you have an opportunity or inclination, catch this personal and public display of affection for a lady who helped us all appreciate art in the streets.

Animal NY has more from yesterday here.

Happy birthday Martha Cooper!

Legendary photographer Martha Cooper, who chronicled the city's graffiti scene in the 1970s-1980s, celebrates a birthday today. (No. 70.)

To honor (and surprise!) her, new art is going up on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall...

Brooklyn Street Art has a photo of Martha's reaction to seeing the mural right at noon.

EV Grieve Etc.: Introducing Metropolitan City Market; new Houston-Bowery mural

Catching up on a few items from the last week or two...

One. The wind from Hurricane Sandy ripped off the cover to the new Met Foods sign on Second Avenue... the store had been renovated in anticipation of this new branding of sorts... it's now Metropolitan City Market...

Two. And over at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall last week, twin brothers HOW and NOSM began creating a storm-themed mural for the corner ...

The mural is dedicated to Tony Goldman, the curator of the wall, who died in September at age 68.

Find more on the mural at BoweryBoogie and Animal NY.

Per Marina Galperina:

See what you want in the bloody mouths of toothy fish, in the stacks of slaughtered tree trunks or in the factory-like humanoid forms spilling diamonds and money from their orifices. The center design is clear — a triangle if black sky around a dead grey street light above a triangle of water with floating debris.

Aiko's finished product on Houston and the Bowery

Just realized that I never posted a shot of Aiko's completed mural on the Houston/Bowery wall...

...and using the annoying "pop art" setting on the camera...

...and on the Bowery side from last week...

Painting over the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

On Tuesday, we noted that Japanese artist Aiko was up next to create art on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall... and tonight, workers were on the scene painting over the current piece from Retna...

[Thanks to @IrisBlas for the photo]

Aiko is next artist to take on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

A tipster tells us that a new mural will be going up soon at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall ... dunno yet who the featured artist will be... In any event, we did spot the above this afternoon outside the wall... Retna, the current artist, wrapped up work back in March...

The Houston/Bowery Mural Wall is currently enjoying, perhaps, Worldwide Acclaim via the new music video by 11-year-old Willow Smith, daughter of Will and Jada.

Updated 3:53 p.m.

Another tipster tells us that Aiko, the Japanese artist who now resides in Brooklyn, will be starting work on the wall this weekend.

Here's an example of her work from the Wynwood Walls in Miami ...
