Streetsblog has the story, with an update
here from Gothamist, who's reporting that a 55-year-old woman was killed in the two-vehicle collision.
The
Post has just filed a report too, saying the victim was a passenger in the minivan involved in the collision.

That's really horrific. I don't know any of the details, but cars are always speeding down 4th St - you gotta be careful crossing this intersection.
The posted speed limit is 30 mph? Not many motorists seem to pay attention to that... you're right Goggla — this is a dangerous intersection.
incredible. How is this possible!! As usual where are the cops when you need them. Well, we do have Dunkin Donuts on every corner now.
1st avenue was closed this morning for the accident. all northbound traffic from below Houston was diverted.
walked by at about 8:45 on way to work, all i saw was the aftermath. it was very chilling.

A horrific scene, anon.
My boyfriend and I live on A and 4th and our room faces towards 1st ave. We heard this crazy screeching sound and then a loud bang (like in the article). I thought maybe a car hit a building the way it sounded.
We couldn't see anything, but then there were sirens and we heard a helicopter circling the area. When we walked to work around 8am, the aftermath was still there. I had no idea that someone had died until my boss found the article on Gothamist saying, "hey, this happened right by you!"
jeez..that is truly awful!
14th and 1st is another dangerous intersection. Two women were killed there last year, among others as I recall.
30 mph is the citywide speed limit, which is still too fast. Of course many streets (such as 1st ave) are engineered to promote speeding.
I wish that I had not even looked at this, it was a friend of mine who lost her mother in this horrific crash....Please send some positive energy her way!
I'm very sorry to hear about your friend's loss, anon.
@anon 10:48 am.
14th and 1st is a treacherous intersection. I've seen a few close calls at the Houston/Essex/A/First Street intersection too...
