What follows is a dispatch from Bob Arihood....
It seems that shortly after 3 pm Thursday afternoon , two elderly female recyclers had some differences at the Key Food recycling facility on 4th st.. A recycling facility known for contentous recyclers . The stronger of the two females tossed the frail appearing , older female to the asphalt . Perhaps there was also an attempt to throw a bucket of something on the female who was thrown down . One can see a female demonstrating to a police officer such an act .
Police took the one female into custody , cuffing her and hauling her off to the 9th precinct . The other female was taken to hospital by ambulance .
2 hours later the recycling facility was closed . Several disappointed recyclers were seen passing the facility with the usual stuffed clear plastic bags full of recyclables . Other recyclers were seen in the area busily collecting more of the discarded East Village wealth that had trickled down to the street .

No. 1 for elderly female wrestling
the beatdown queen looks rather well heeled in her Adidas. I see that little Asian lady everywhere....great closing shot.
Always seems to be drama brewing over there... Just getting my 5 cents in! See what I just did?
bob, you need to come back man. you probably just needed a hiatus. hey, brett favre did it three times...
as for this post, i'm only a paycheck away from collecting recycling myself, so i can understand the frustration. but i'd take-out that frustration on someone else, like the woo-wooers for instance
"east village wealth" haha.
always an interesting scene unfolding there.
not cool to hit the elderly, esp when they jus tryin to make a dolla outta fifteen cents
I hate that recycling center. There's always broken glass and stanky mystery stains the whole length of the adjacent sidewalk. Whoever is profiting from it needs to do a better job of maintaining the area.
Anyone else notice that for the past few months someone has been rifling through the city garbage cans on the corners, as well as residential curbside trash bags? Every trash day, at least one of our building's bags are torn upon and strewn on the sidewalk. I saw the two perpetrators last week when walking my dog around midnight, and it was not obvious what if anything they were looking for. One was going through the city trash can on 12th & 4th ave (throwing contents on the sidewalk), and the other was ripping open residential trash on 12th street and tossing on the sidewalk. Definitely not looking for food -- Maybe credit card receipts, etc????
craziness weve all witness before!... http://awkword-hiphop.blogspot.com/2010/07/awkword-street-view-ancient-asian-can.html
@anon 2:46 Thanks for the comment. I've noticed a lot of the city trash cans have been turned over on the corners. Chalked that up more to the drunks than anything.
I am often surprised by what people toss without shredding. I found a stash of insurance claims, home owners insurance forms and prescription info on the sidewalk near my apartment. And the stuff all belonged to my neighbor.
There's a lady in the area that has a shopping cart filled with bank statements instead of cans, although I don't know if I've ever seen her north of Delancey.
I'm genuinely surprised the fight didn't involve a Key Food employee. Why the the employees feel the need to instigate fights with crazy guys inside the store in the name of honor is way beyond my realm of understanding.
uh...WHAT is the contention about? Taking too long? Am I missing something?
So which one of these pillars of the community will we be holding a candle lit vigil for when they OD?
to Ifeelfat . the contention comes from the fact that the strong often take bags of cans from the weak . The strong and aggressive also often force their way to the head of the line .There are often disputes over what belongs to whom and who's up next to dispose of thier cans and bottles .
Holy shit! I recognize the perp, she lives in my building. She is a nut so I am not completely surprised. I will have to ask Helena what happened.
I don't want to come off as language police or anthing, but I kinda hate the use of "female" as a noun, because it's cop talk, reducing people to dots.
