Protest set for new CB3-backed limit on concerts in Tompkins Square Park

Longtime East Village activist/photojournalist John Penley passes along word of a protest against the new CB3-backed proposal to limit the number of concerts in Tompkins Square Park:

Halloween gathering at 7 p.m. in Tompkins Square Park to talk and protest this new Yuppie Scum CB3 Resolution.

Also, The East Villager checks in this week with a piece on the concert issue. Read that here.

In truth--there have been few concerts this summer and last. The Police monitor these events for the noise levels-so I cannot understand why they are now limited?????Music is not an annoyance-it is an art--

I don't understand the issue with the concerts at all. They are not late at night, they are infrequent, they do not incite violence or other negative activities. Music is culture. It's positive. It's what the park and neighborhood need.

The over/under on the number of protesters is 20 and I've got my money on the under.

incessant noise, music, drum beats, etc. that last for more than a few minutes can drive one out of wherever they are. it's not a judgment on music, only on how loud it is played.
there are many young folks that are prematurely hard of hearing because of the volume of the live concerts they attend and their over-the-top stereos. these days even the movies are too loud.
if somebody doesn't like classical music they don't go to carnegie hall. if they don't like punk they didn't go to cbgbs. there is no choice in public places (parks, street fairs). the only choice is to leave the area.

Looks like "Community" Board member Susan Stetzer has achieved the controversy and conflict between neighbors that she's been looking to stir up....

@ CF,
I think that you need to look a lil' deeper into this before assigning blame. I don't know SS, but I know that locals come at her constantly with one complaint or another, so she has more than enough to do than pick fights. If she's pushing this, it's because one or more nearby residents are pressing her. They are the ones who need to be addressed. Why rag on her?
