Wind knocks out Stuyvesant Grocery plywood on 14th Street and Avenue A

Thanks to EV Grieve reader Tom for these shots yesterday along 14th Street at Avenue A... where the high winds wiped out the plywood outside the fire-damaged buildings along this commercial stretch...

..later in the evening workers put up barriers ...

Damn....it's taking them long enough to start any major repairs. I heard the grocery was planning to reopen in March/April, but obviously they have a loooooong way to go. Too bad. The area is dark and creepy without that place, we all miss them.

Yes, after they gutted the place they've done zero work ... but maybe because it was winter. Last summer I had heard from the manager of Petes-A-Place that they weren't planning to reopen until October. I wondered why it would take that long. But I guess it's understandable if they're going to do zero work during the winter.

October! Well, if it must be so. At least they ARE reopening. But damn, that's a long time to wait for a meatball sandwich!

If they're working on the same time table as the bagel place scheduled for 10th and A, it'll re-open in 2015. Dunno what's up with that bagel joint, but they put up the Empire State Building faster than that place is taking shape.

There are now wall frames installed where the former walls stood, with new wooden protector walls and the metal barricades are intact. Does this mean that new construction is imminent?

John,

They put up that new plywood construction wall on Monday. I'm pretty sure that it's just a better wall -- all the aluminum studs go all the way up and are anchored to the masonry on top -- in replacement of that iffy wall that the big bad wolf blew down on Saturday. I don't think it necessarily means that construction is commencing soon.

Anyways, I hope construction commences and Petes-A-Place and Stuyvesant Grocery return soon. There's a rumor that NYU is buying the property to build dorms. If true, that would be truly awful.
