Sky East suspiciously receives a lot of institutional-looking beds and furniture

EV Grieve reader thisboyshouts noted the following arrival yesterday at 636 E. 11th St. between Avenue B and Avenue C: About 20 institution-style beds, chairs, dressers, desks and other furniture.

This is Sky East, run by Magnum Management, which is owned and operated by Benjamin "Sledgehammer" Shaoul.

Thisboyshouts wonders what could possible be coming here: Dorm? Hotel? Sanitarium? (The rumor is that part of the space will be used for NYU housing.)

Possibly related! Thisboyshouts also notes that he had to go over to Sky East Friday night around 10:30 because they had workers inside buffing the floors with the windows wide open ... which you could hear clear up and down the block.

After complaining to the Sky East doorman on duty, the workers shut the windows but kept working through the night, which must have been a pleasure for the people living in the building.

Spoke to a couple of residents in this building last month, as I was looking for a new apartment. They said there was a rumor that this building was being partially converted into an NYU dorm. So glad I didn't move here!

I am former Sky East resident who lived in the building until the end of July. Although my lease was not set to expire until October, I received a call from the management company informing me that my lease would be terminated early. When I proceeded to be very upset and ask for the reason, the representative was extremely evasive and could not respond with any comment better than "the management company needs the apartment back."

After speaking with the doorman, he confirmed that, yes, they are turning it into some kind of dorms so that the greedy management company can squeeze every last cent out of the available space. I am almost certain what they have done is illegal, however, as one resident, it has been very difficult to fight. Needless to say, I am more than happy to be doen with this company.

The positive is that by renting, NYU doesn't avoid property taxes so we citizens don't have to subsidize these children.

It's possible this will be temporary housing for NYU students. This fall will be the second year in a row that NYU has overbooked student housing. This is a policy the university will continue to do.

The troops need to be rallied. If people protest out front and bring some attention to this maybe it'll get shut down.

I recently moved out of that building and I can say they definitely have an arrangement with the university. There are fliers on half the doors every month that they should be out by 11:00 a.m. for cleaning. The building is full of loud children.
