On Page 3 today, the Post makes a big fucking deal about a main vegetarian course at Northern Spy on East 12th Street that features roasted carrots for "a stunning $18."
Meanwhile, back on Page 42, there's a feature noting that "veggies step out from the sidelines and into starring roles at these NYC restaurants."
Back here, the Post doesn't seem outraged by the puny looking mushroom dish at Empellon Cocina on First Avenue... that costs $18...
What's the difference?

For the money, Northern Spy is a millions times more pleasant and laidback than the artisanal d-bags at Empellon Cocina.
@EVG: The NY Post of today is trash. It's not the reasoned, liberal Post of the late '60s; the paper was purchased by Murdoch in 1974 (according to my Google-Fu) and it was destroyed by him.
Instead of asking why their "articles" are inconsistent, ask why they still have any readership.

A quick online search informs us of that the wholesale price of carrots is considerably lower than Hen-of-the-Woods mushrooms:
$30--- 50 lb sack fresh carrots
$21--- 1 lb bag fresh Hen-of-the-Woods mushrooms
These particular mushrooms are 3400% more expensive than carrots, in other words.
If you despise the NY Post’s politics, you could just say as much, without involving innocent fungi.

But regarding your home economics research, I'll bet you that the weight of hen-in-the-woods mushroom flakes in that second dish is less than the 0.45 ounces of mushroom that would cost $0.60 (the cost of a pound of your carrots). And you're forgetting the wild spinach, freekeh, and almonds in the carrot dish - they've got to cost something too.
Bottom line: restaurant food is always much more expensive than the cost of the ingredients. Mostly you're paying for the tens of thousands of dollars per month in rent that the restaurant pays to the landlord. They've got to sell a lot of carrots or mushrooms to pay that rent. Want to save money, eat better, and avoid the crowds? -- eat at home.
