[Updated] Behold the cooktop sidewalk garden on St. Mark's Place
The other day, we noticed some discarded cooktops lying on the sidewalk along St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue... and this morning, we noticed that someone (that one guy who you always see on the block) used them to help created a little sidewalk garden where this tree once lived ...

Yes! This is the New York I love (and miss more and more). No sterile, boxy, glass luxury apartment buildings please. More earthy hands-on goodness!
Unfortunately "the City" will probably tear this up within a week.

I agree, if the dog piss or drunks don't KO it first.
Very pretty! What is a "cooktop?"
@ The Philosophical Zombie
From Merriam-Webster!
cook·top
ˈko͝okˌtäp/
noun
1.
a cooking unit, usually with hot plates or burners, built into or fixed on the top of a cabinet or other surface.
I didn't know what cook tops where either...Maybe it is a regional thing, but if I understand correctly, they are called hotplates where I come from... But still, from these photos, I can't make out hotplates, or cooktops, or anything other than an artfully arranged urban tableau made up of bouquets of lovely flowers and plants amidst some cleverly arranged cut-up asphalt... So sweet indeed...
Guys! This is a cooktop:

Outdoor Cook Top Mac and Cheese
Ingredients
1/2 pound elbow macaroni
4 tablespoons butter
2 eggs
6 ounces evaporated milk
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 teaspoon sea salt
Fresh black pepper
3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
10 ounces sharp cheddar, shredded
Directions
In a large pot of boiling, salted water cook the pasta to al dente and drain. Return to the pot and melt in the butter. Toss to coat.
Whisk together the eggs, milk, hot sauce, salt, pepper, and mustard. Stir into the pasta and add the cheese. Over low heat continue to stir for 3 minutes or until creamy.
Oh no! Those poor plants. Too bad that nice man didn't have a plant guard of some fashion to put around the perimeter.
Great job! I never would have thought of this. Props!:)
looks like they built onto it, they ruined the basic look of it in the updated photo but it may not be finished...maybe a work in progress?
Huh! Fascinating change to the garden. Please keep us posted with updates on this! I am now officially obsessed.
