A ballerina for 2nd Avenue

The mural by Brazilian twins Os Gêmeos has some company now on Second Avenue at East First Street...

We noticed someone working on the adjacent building in the empty lot last evening...

... and today...

We're told that it's the work of French street artist JR. (See his other NYC ballerinas here.)

You have some time to enjoy it before the 10-story building with 31 residences and ground-floor retail goes up here.

I wonder who finances these pieces? It must cost a pretty penny to get the building to go along with it, and the equipment, the artists, etc (these artists are too "big time" to be doing this independently and on their own volition).

My guess is that the developer is savvy enough to know that getting these artists involved will only make their project more buzzworthy/desireable, because "street art is so cool and hip".

You are right, this street art is pretty freaking cool. And cool things tend to be hip. So therefore it is hip and cool.
