Popeyes getting nearer to unleashing the chicken combo deals on 1st Avenue
Renovations continue inside (and out!) the long-vacant 39 First Ave. here between Second Street and Third Street.
As we noted back in November, a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen was said to be the new tenant.
While there isn't any exterior signage at the moment, EVG reader Ace A Acekin did get a look inside ... and saw that workers have hoisted the sandwich combo deal menus behind the counter...
Popeyes emerged victorious last summer during the Chicken Sandwich Wars, simpler times when people cared about things like this.
No word on an East Village opening date for this Popeyes. There are more than 15 in the metropolitan area.
This retail space has sat empty for four-and-a-half years ... ever since NY Village Deli moved to a smaller storefront on the block.

There used to be a Popeyes on the NE corner of 13th St and 1st Ave -
they were tasty, but had very bad management.
They typically had about 3-4 pieces of chicken at a time and
were not nice by any means and had closed after some time.
I have to admit that even though I rarely eat fast food anywhere, Popeyes is the only exception I will make. I love their spicy boneless chicken strips with dirty rice and a biscuit So delicious. I am a little excited a location is coming to our hood. Not the healthiest meal, but definitely a guilty pleasure.
Why has KFC abandoned us 😢😢😢
I miss the Pudgies that was around this area. Healthyish fried chicken.
Sigh, used to live above the popeyes on 13th and 1st avenue. I'll never forget the smell of cajun spices that permeated all my belongings 24/7 or the mice that were the special surprise visitors to my apartment. Those truly were magical times.
i am so happy that we fill a store with something as tasty as this JOY
Boo! Bobwhite for life!
Three(-ish) things:
A. This is the start of the franchises that will be the only ones opening up and surviving the restaurant business post-pandemic when small businesses have closed.
II. That's not to say I dislike Popeye's; like most-- well, blow me down with them fried chicken, mac and cheese, and biscuits.
II(i): Speaking of biscuits, if the The Biscuit Boys were still around, they're slogan would've been-- Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Quarantine, Drunk! And would be offering curbside pickup--served by their ladies while peeling potatoes.
II(ii) There's also a Popeye's on 14th st between 5th and 6th avenue. I know it's a "far" from the neighborhood, but after having consumed those empty but satisfying calories, it's good o burn them with a walk.
AND last but not least
3. Anthony Bourdain would frequent Popeyes for late-night run without being recognized, so he would sometimes pull a hoodie over his head as if going to a porn shop. “To me, Popeyes is exotica. I was eating noodles and roast goose and Chinese food for the past 10 days. So to be back and eat some Americana food, well, I will weep with gratitude at macaroni and cheese."
Love that chicken from Popeyes.
I was born and raised in New Orleans. Have been here in NYC for two decades now. Whenever I see a location, I become nostalgic for my childhood. Love me some Popeye's :)
👁️ ❤️ Popeye's Chicken ,I'm their #1 customer!❤️ Popeye's 🐓
Wow. The love for Popeye's is impressive. I've never had, but I do look forward to trying "the sandwich."
I stopped eating meat some years ago, but have to say, my mouth still waters at the thought of plowing through a pile of Popeye's dark meat chicken...
I agree, Popeye's is fast food for people who don't eat fast food.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the chicken crackling at Casa Adella. Best fried chicken in the East Village. I also miss the sancocho, which is one of the best ways in the world to spend $6.
Not a big fast food chain supporter but Popeye's is legit! Definitely wouldn't put them in the same class with Bob White or other top notch places. But for a quick fix, its a good deal.
Shoot, I'm happy. Went today, whenever I want to eat a quick and cheap fixing, I can just come here! The Chinese restaurant next to it is very good too if you want a soup on the side.
