A crew was out early this morning in Tompkins Square Park... cutting up parts of the majestic Elm tree that came down on the southeast corner at the entrance on Seventh Street and Avenue B on Aug. 3 during Tropical Storm Isaias ... Goggla shared these photos...
Unfortunately, the rest of the tree must be removed — workers said that the Elm has tree rot...

Hate to see the loss of those magnificent giants...
This is so heartbreaking. That grand giant was such a relic, and to lose yet another elm from one of the few surviving enclaves of trees not decimated by the 1920s Dutch Elm Disease outbreak hurts deeply.

holy cow is that a massive job to do in cutting that tree down.

It will of course take time to grow but another tree could be put in its place
That tree was an English Elm, not an American Elm, and the only one in the park. Tons of Squirrels lived in it, and my guess is that it was one of the oldest trees in the park.
