A view this morning from outside the main lawn in Tompkins Square Park... there has been some discussion about
the trash situation in the Park, where staff leaves out the large trash bags... and then the trash sits out overnight.
As Park regulars have noted, it's not uncommon to find the bags ripped open by rats overnight, the contents spread over the lawn.
Thanks to Goggla for the photo.

What a mess - sad
Single most mismanaged park in the city: Fact.
This is exactly why I will never sit on those patches of sand with my towel and pretend I am at the beach. I've seen many rats scurry about their way across that semi-grassy area. It is not hygienic. I fail to understand how others aren't remotely bothered by this. There are droppings, litter and sometimes, syringes. This is especially a significant problem from Thursday to Saturday evenings when our neighborhood is run amok by drunken kids. I hope there is a better solution to this growing issue. Does the city even have additional resources for decent and effective bins? Can't we do better as a community? In the mornings on my walk through the park, I often see mounds upon mounds of trash, mainly food item boxes with leftover pizza and sweets on the ground because the bins were already overflowing. This is an absolute feast for rats (and cockroaches) and their nearby colonies. Now that we are heading into the thick of summer with increasing heat and humidity, the appearance and the lingering aroma of that trash will not be pleasant.
I despair of this neighborhood on every level.
That what the whole neighborhood is looking like in recent months one big mess and no one is doing anything about
A growing realization - Nobody CARES!
Unless some neighborhood group is formed to deal with this nothing will happen. City Hall doesn't care. There is no accountability. What are you going to do? Not vote Democrat?
If Pizza Rat and his pals get wind of this they're going to party tonight like it's 1999!
