Report: 'Rowdy teens' blamed for series of attacks at Sheen Brothers on 10th and B

Updated 3/10: One teen has been arrested, per the News.

The Daily News reports that "a group of rowdy teens have harassed and attacked workers" at Sheen Brothers, the market on the SE corner of 10th Street and Avenue B.

Owner Jay Patel told the News that "he has called the police time and again about the teen terrors, but cops have told him their hands are tied."

Video surveillance dating back to October shows a series of assaults at the market, including one in which teens repeatedly punch a clerk in the face.

Patel said they spent $7,000 on an automatic gate and a buzzer system to beef up the shop's security. Customers have to be buzzed in and out of the corner market now.

As part of his East Village walking tour yesterday, Mayor Adams visited Sheen Brothers and vowed "we are not going to tolerate" the attacks.

The News pointed out that overall crime is up in the 9th Precinct 67.5% this year — 325 incidents vs. 194 in 2021. This link takes you to the PDF of the NYPD CompStats.

The guys who work at this store don’t deserve this. It is awful that it has been allowed to happen for so long. I hope these harassers can be identified and stopped.

The Police say they cant do anything. Such BS...If their Captain's nephew owned the store you'd have a Police car parked out front all day long. So many of them are WORTHLESS (from one who has had to deal with them and got NO results.

"Their hands are tied"?? Isn't this exactly why we have a police force, to deal with sh*t like this?

Why don't the cops do anything about all of this stuff that just breeds more similar behavior?! Accepting all of the f-ing graffiti is the same lawlessness encouraging crap

These idiots hang out by the basketball courts in Tompkins Square, and at the Dry Dock playground on 10th and D. It shouldn’t be too hard to find them.

The current incarnation of Sheen Brothers are nice guys.

I recognize two of teens. Easy to find. Just like the violent crackheads that keep ending up back on the street if the cops don't do something eventually the neighborhood will.

Are "hands tied" because of specific NYPD policies or is it cops pissed off and sitting out because bail reform means their actions are pointless?

WTF NYPD??? It’s a reoccurring crime. Shouldn’t be hard to protect citizens and business owners in the community. Smsh.

I assume they feel like it's pointless because they'll just be released and do it again. Besides having a "record" which these kids either don't care about or don't have the foresight to care about/believe their records will be wiped when they turn 18, there aren't any real consequences for them.

Do you get to not do your job because you "feel like it's pointless?" How many of us get to pitch wobblies instead of working when our bosses change policies?
