Workers are stocking shelves for Food City, a new supermarket to open this spring at 85 Avenue D between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...
Not sure at the moment if this Food City is any relation to the longtime shop that closed on the UWS in 2013.
This space was previously a Rite Aid, which closed late last spring.
Avenue D could use another grocer after Uncle Johnny closed in February 2022 at Fifth Street last year to make way for a new 13-floor development.

Wow, right next to the other grocery store, so weird
I wish them success. The grocery stores on D are a sad affair, pretending that nearby residents don't appreciate a good selection. While the food desert comments are usually bs, it makes you wonder when you see these stores.
I love this; I'll definitely trek over to see if there are price wars going on.
I will miss Rite-Aid—is there something weird going on with their headquarters in Harrisburg?—but it's definitely good to have another supermarket in the nabe. (Now if we can get one of them to go 24 hours!)
Just stopped by. It's like Whole Foods but down the block. I wish them luck but the market for this stuff doesn't seem very Ave D like. I did walk out with Manuka Honey. Never seen that sold in the flesh.
