In recent weeks workers have cleaned out the long-vacant (four years!) storefront on the SW corner of Second Avenue and 10th Street... prompting some speculation of a new retail tenant.
Turns out the landlord was sprucing up the space for a new suitor, as "for lease by owner" signs are now up in the windows.
Capital One was the last tenant, closing this branch in May 2019.
P.S.
Bring back Rectangles!

Can you imagine the prices at a today's Rectangles...?
I recall a perpetual help wanted sign for a bartender at Rectangles... seemed like they were looking for a new one every few weeks...
The only tenant whom can afford this rent is either a bank or a chain pharmacy.
Bank branches and chain pharmacies have been closing locations on a regular basis the past 3-5 years.
Did anyone actually go to Rectangles? It was there forever it seems but I don't remember anyone personally who hung out there. Maybe I didn't get out enough back in the day.
It will probably become a new smoke shop they seem to be springing up all over the place taking over long vacant storefronts all over the LES/EV.
Following up on the previous EVG comment....
The Walgreens on the SE corner of 14th Street and Fourth Avenue closed in early 2022. The Walgreens on Astor Place closed in August 2020 ... three neighborhood Duane Reade by Walgreens locations have closed in recent years — the outpost on Avenue D at Houston and First Avenue between 14th Street and 15th Street shuttered in November 2019 while the storefront on 10th Street and Third Avenue shut down in early March 2019.
The two Capital Ones in the East Village closed (here and Third Street and Avenue C). In recent years, Citi, Chase and Santander all shuttered their outposts on Avenue A.
