Flaco, the Eurasian Eagle-Owl, was found dead on Feb. 23 after apparently colliding with a building on the Upper West Side. As the Associated Press put it, "Flaco ... escaped from New York City's Central Park Zoo and became one of the city's most beloved celebrities as he flew around Manhattan."
Flaco also spent eight days in the East Village and Lower East Side this past November.

Flaco died of rodenticide poisoning and fell from his perch, the exact same scenario as what happened to our Tompkins Square hawk chicks in 2019. One died in the nest, and the other fell from the nest after becoming too weak to stand. We need to outlaw second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides that kill any animal that ingests it. California has done it after losing wildlife including cougars, bobcats and owls. There is no reason New York can't do the same.

What a beautiful tribute to Flaco. I sincerely hope that Flaco's death has reinforced an
awareness that we should protect our wildlife. Flaco did not die in vain.
