Someone tore a tree from the ground and left it in a 1st Avenue trash can

For the "why-we-can't-have-nice-things" files.

Remember the freshly planted tree on the west side of First Avenue, between Ninth Street and 10th Street, that we mentioned a few weeks ago? See that hole in the ground in the top photo?

Someone yanked the tree out and tossed it into the corner trash can.
Klayer tried his best to replant it, but the tree will need some more soil...

That is really shameful as people go out of their way to plant and grow things like this tree and other people for absolutely no reason destroy it. This is why gardening in public spaces is so difficult.

This is a nothing burger considering all the quality of life issues in NYC right now. Drugged out zombies everywhere, drug dealers, and out of control graffiti vandalism bring on the 1970s and 80ss= by electing Mandami!

I got more soil and added with some water. But if anyone else wants to stop by and give the tree some LOVE please do!

If all those things are currently happening, that would make them *current* mayor Eric Adams' fault, not a person who hasn't been elected yet. Hope this helps!

I feel like this is the behavior of someone having a really bad trip... you know... or some goddamn idiot kid who thought it's funny. Either way, that's sad. This is on another level of a classic tree-pit/publicly accessible plant/flower situation ... if you plant things that are just a bit too nice, people take them. They have no shame in doing it either. You have to plant something that's nice, but common - like Daffodils.

It could have been that Aronofsky character. Has anyone checked the tapes?

Between AirB&B, the bridge & tunnel crowd and local high school & college kids the EV has become NYC's new hangout. The crowds are amazing... and not in a good way.

Thanks for reporting on this. So disgusting and sad that someone so off the rails did this. Yes ,it appears a Japanese Maple. (The leaves vaguely resemble those of marijuana -- just sayin'.) A very expensive tree--especially one this size. I hope the folks on the block can help keep it alive so that it re-roots. And yay to the generous donor that planted it.

Buddy, our current mayor is an ex-cop who renounced the Democrats. Do you think Mamdani has magic powers?

It would be nice to catch the person who did this and make him/her/they/it perform many many hours of community service.

Around a month ago someone has taken an axe to at least 3 trees on 4th st between A/B. All 3 trees have the clear marks but seem ok. The idea of someone that deranged walking the streets with an axe is horrifying.
