The 9th Precinct tweeted out a reminder about this month's Community Council meeting ... these take place on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. So that would be this Tuesday, Feb. 20, per the tweet.

The meetings take place at the 9th Precinct, 321 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

This is an opportunity for residents to address any concerns and ask 9th Precinct officials for their input on recent crime statistics.

9th Precinct looking for information on the recent Avenue C shooting

Detectives from the 9th Precinct continue to investigate the late-night shooting on Avenue C at 11th Street. The $2,500 reward posters arrived yesterday.

There is very little information about the shooting in circulation. According to previous reports, a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times as he was riding a bike along Avenue C. He took himself to Bellevue Hospital, where he was initially in serious but stable condition. He was reportedly cooperating with the police. The only description of the shooter: He was wearing a black hoodie and black ski mask. It was not clear if the cyclist was the intended victim.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). You may also submit tips online.

[Updated] 9th Precinct hosting Sector Safety Summit meetings

On Wednesday evening, the 9th Precinct is hosting a Sector Charlie Safety Summit at the Community Board 3 offices.

Sector Charlie covers this part of the neighborhood: The north side of East Houston Street to the south side of Seventh Street, from the west side of First Avenue to the east side of Broadway. (Last October, the 9th Precinct started a new initiative called the Neighborhood Coordination Officers — NCO — program. The Precinct is split up into four sectors, with two officers assigned to each sector. Find the sectors and the responsible officers here.)

Per the flyers posted on various front doors within Sector Charlie, this will be:

An open, honest discussion between the local Neighborhood Coordination Officers and the community. We will discuss the NYPD's NCO Program, how it affects you, and any issues going on within your area.

Why should you go?

This is an opportunity to become acquainted with the officers who are directly responsible for your area, and to inform them of any problems that you might be encountering at your home or business.

The meeting is Wednesday night from 6:30-8. The CB3 office is at 59 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery. (Refreshments will be served!)

Today is the National Night Out Against Crime at the 9th Precinct

The 9th Precinct is hosting the annual Night Out Against Crime community event today on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue from 3-7 p.m.

The flyer mentions a bounce house... but no word of the officer on stilts (who, as I recall, was MIA last year).

9th Precinct hosting blood drive in honor of rookie officer who died on Feb. 1

The 9th Precinct is hosting a blood drive tomorrow at the station house on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue. (Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)

As Bedford + Bowery noted, the blood drive is in honor of Bianca Bennett. The off-duty rookie officer died in a car crash driven by a fellow cop in the Bronx on Feb. 1. Bennett, 27, had been stationed at the 9th Precinct.

The flag remains at half staff at the 9th Precinct on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Bianca Bennett, a rookie police officer, died Wednesday night in a car crash while off duty with a fellow officer...



According to the Daily News, "speed definitely played a part" in the crash.

Officer Bianca Bennett, who worked at the 9th Precinct on Fifth Street, died in a single-car crash in the Bronx on Wednesday night, according to published reports. She was 27.

Per the Post:

Sources say Bennett was a passenger in a red Dodge Durango driven by a fellow off-duty officer, who lost control and ran off the roadway. The SUV flipped and burst into flames.

The other officer reportedly sustained trauma and burns to both of his legs. He remains in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital.

The rookie officer was set to marry her high school sweetheart in April.

Report: Crime is down so far in the East Village in 2016

The Villager attended the most recent Ninth Precinct Community Council meeting ... and here's the takeaway, per the paper:

The precinct’s crime rate is down 27 percent over all for the month. Specifically, robberies are down 57 percent, felony assaults are down 46 percent, burglaries are down 25 percent, and grand larceny is down 24 percent. The only spike, said Venice, was stolen vehicles — five this month, compared with only one during the previous month. The precinct’s crime rate is down 5 percent over all for the year.

Most of the crimes in the precinct have been grand larceny — the result of people leaving their property (often credit cards) somewhere and it being stolen.

Meanwhile, the NYPD announced earlier this week the launch of CompStat 2.0, "a newly public, online version of the data tool that the department has used since 1990 to map crime statistics by precinct," per Gothamist.

The monthly 9th Precinct Community Council meeting is tonight; plus 1 way to end a party

The 9th Precinct Community Council meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.

We heard about one topic that residents will address during tonight's meeting. According to the East Fifth Street Block Association, there have been increasing complaints from residents on Second Avenue and on the southeast side of East Sixth Street and the northeast side of East Fifth Street who "are suffering from noisy, late outdoor parties."

Specifically:

"There was one in the yard of 237 E. 5th St. on Saturday and neighbors from various abutting buildings could be seen hanging out of their window entreating the revelers to quiet down. Police were called and did not show up ... the whole thing finally was shut down when someone hosed the party down."

The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m., is at the 9th Precinct, 321 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Today is the National Night Out Against Crime

The annual National Night Out Against Crime happens today from 3-8 outside the 9th Precinct on East Fifth Street … there will be games for kids (we heard something about a dunking booth) and food … and hopefully an appearance by the original patrol tower — the officer on stilts…
