Another pink-out at 57 Great Jones St.

Photos by Lola Sáenz

Once again, someone slapped the exterior of 57 Great Jones St. with pink paint and once again rolled out the commemorative plaque for one-time resident Jean-Michel Basquiat...
This happened late last summer here between the Bowery and Lafayette. (We've been told the person who did this is obsessed with Basquiat, who lived and worked in the building once owned by Andy Warhol from 1983 to his death in 1988.)

Angelina Jolie opened Atelier Jolie here late last year... the space includes a cafe operated by Eat Offbeat featuring food "from around the world made by refugee chefs in NYC." (Try the baklava!)

Angelina Jolie is creating a collaborative space for designers and artisans in Basquiat's former studio on Great Jones Street

Angelina Jolie has announced a new venture, Atelier Jolie — "a creative collective for self-expression" — opening this fall at a notable address — 57 Great Jones St. between the Bowery and Lafayette.

The two-level building was once owned by Andy Warhol ... and Jean-Michel Basquiat was living and working in the second-floor studio at the time of his death in 1988.

Jolie made the announcement on Instagram last night...

This space had been on the rental market since last November. The back of the ground-floor space was home to Bohemian, an invite-only Japanese restaurant that provided some intrigue for food writers 10-plus years ago. (As we understand, Bohemian's parent company, Play Earth Inc., owns the building.)

Atelier Jolie will serve as a workshop for under-represented tailors and designers who will then be able to showcase their work from 57 Great Jones.
Here's a more detail description of the business via the Atelier Jolie website
I am building a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers and artisans from around the world. A place to have fun. To create your own designs with freedom. To discover yourself.

We will use only leftover, quality vintage material and deadstock. You will be able to repair or upcycle pieces from your closet you wish to revive, perfecting fit, breathing new life into what could have been thrown away, and creating quality heirloom garments with personal meaning.

We hope to create a community of creativity and inspiration, regardless of socio-economic background. We will spotlight the people who play a part in each creation. We will bring together a diverse team, including apprenticeships for refugees and other talented, underappreciated groups, with positions of dignity based on skill. And as we work with global artisans and creators, we hope to help share the richness of their cultural heritage and support the development of their own businesses.

It's all new, and I'm more of an artist than a businesswoman. I hope to see you there, and to be one of the many creating with you within our new creative collective.
Jolie's social media and website note the building's history: "A privilege to be in this space. We will do our best to respect and honor its artist legacy with community and creativity."
The building's façade has served as an ad-hoc memorial to Basquiat through the years. On the 30th anniversary of Basquiat's death in 2018, his friend and SAMO© collaborator, Albert Diaz, along with Adrian Wilson, created a mural that read: "I didn’t sign up to be used as a face for name brand crap." (Wilson also curated a pop-up gallery here.

In February 2022, workers painted over all the tributes... though, the various wheatepastes and tags eventually made a comeback, as the top photo from this morning shows. Jolie will reportedly leave the building's exterior as is.

You can read this post at Village Preservation for more history of the building, which once served as the HQ for Five Points Gang ringleader Paul Kelly.

Summer Fridays rehash: About Angelina Jolie's 'semi-crusty phase' in Tompkins Square Park

Hey, we're STILL digging into the EVG archives for these next few summer Fridays... We first posted this one on Oct. 9, 2009...

------------

As Scoopy writes in this week's issue of The Villager:

We were surprised to learn, recently, ... that none other than Angelina Jolie also went through her own semi-crusty phase, hanging out in the park and smoking pot ... During the L.E.S. Slacktivists/veterans' "adoptathon" outside Christodora House last month, Lara Mascara ... told us how she used to run with the young Jolie. "We were friends of the band Sick of It All," she said. "We called ourselves the Alleyway Crew." The members each had a Sick of It All dragon tattoo. "Angelina Jolie was skinny, no figure — just straight, she had no boobs — hair in her eyes," but did sport her trademark big lips even back then, Mascara recalled. "Her dad didn't pay child support. ... She was just not going to high school, like all of us. She was known as Angie."

East Village Cathedral stars alongside Angelina Jolie in 'Salt'

Waaaaay back in May 2009, Angelina Jolie, the former semi-crusty of Tompkins Square Park, came to the East Village while filming "Salt," the mineral-turn-CIA thriller....

The crew filmed on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue inside the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection. In honor of the movie opening today... let's take a look at the role the Cathedral played in the film...

First! Woo! Angelina over here! Here she is on Second Street!

With the ball-in-chain in tow on the Cathedral steps...

Anyway, according to the website, the crew used the Cathedral to replicate the interior of the Makariev Monastery in Russia when it was an orphanage in 1970s Soviet Russia. You see, Angelina plays a spy who may or may not be Russian...so this might be some flashback scene or something...

No idea whether these scenes made it into the movie... Perhaps I'll by a pirated DVD from that guy on the corner for $5 to see.

Also, curious about what kind of location fee the Cathedral received...

Updated: A Scouting Life shares a "Salt" review with us... "It took years, but 'The Last Boy Scout' finally has competition for the most ludicrous action film ever made."

Ouch! That's seriously bad.

And I asked if the Cathedral made the cut. Yes, but!: "They did shoot the orphanage but the scenes there were all pretty soft focus and dreamlike so you didn't see much of it."

I hope that "Salt" is a more exciting movie than these photos

I walked on Second Avenue and Second Street yesterday around 5 where the crew was camped out for the CIA thriller "Salt" starring Angelina Jolie. And I saw...not much. Trucks! Lights! Did I miss the mayhem? Anything? Later, it was suggested that they might not have done any filming because of the rain. It was my understanding, though, that the crew would be filming inside and on the steps of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection on Second Street. Let's say that they didn't film, does all this sit around for a few more days...? Or will this be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader later this summer? And when will it actually stop raining anyway, June?

Things to do if you're filming a movie today on Second Street and have some downtime

You know moviemaking! You stand around for 10 hours waiting to film a 45-second scene. Lots of downtime. So for the cast (Angelina!) and crew of "Salt," filming today on Second Street, here are some things that you can do right around the shoot location...

Shop for Christmas and Valentine's Day decorations at the 99-cent store on First Avenue near Fifth Street...

Buy a few beers to go from the Houston Village Farm on First Avenue at Fourth Street...

Window shop at Brickman and Son's on First Avenue...

Take your dry cleaning to the Hollywood-sounding Exquisite Cleaners on First Avenue at Third Street...

See if "Salt" will be a box-office hit at the modest-sounding Gifted Psychic on Third Street...

Sell your Academy Award here... (or at least get your bangs trimmed)

Try a massage at the Waterfront Spa on Second Street...

Do a few loads of laundry at First Avenue at Second Street...

Watch the NYC theatrical debut of "Ice People" at the Anthology Film Archives at Second Avenue and Second Street...

Drink at the Mars Bar...

Why the paparazzi will be in the East Village tomorrow (OMG! Angelina!)

"Salt" is expected to be one of the big Hollywood summer movie smasheroos upon its release on July 23, 2010. It's a CIA thriller (a rogue agent!) with Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It's being directed by Phillip Noyce.

First, of course, the movie needs to be made. Which is why they're filming in the East Village tomorrow, specifically on Second Street between First and Second Avenues.

It promises to be one humdinger of a production. (Let's hope this scene doesn't call for confetti.) "It's the biggest film shoot in New York City right now," a crew member told me. They've been filming around the city...and in Albany! (It's such a big film, Tom Cruise was once going to play the lead role.) The crew member was sitting on the steps the Russian Orthodox Cathedral keeping an eye on the equipment. This was the easy part, he said. Because tomorrow...

...he'll have to help keep the paparazzi at bay. "You'll know when she's here."

"Salt" substitute

The Divine Liturgy this morning at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection on Second Street was held in the basement this morning...

...as the church is prepped for a scene tomorrow in the Angelina Jolie thriller "Salt." (And now you know why the headline to this post is so corny.)

Wardrobe and hair and makeup will also be taking place tomorrow in the basement hall.
