Reader appreciation: Barnyard Cheese Shop

Via the EVG inbox...

Barnyard has been open throughout the coronavirus crisis, and I appreciate their sandwiches now more than ever. I've also picked up a few of their grab-and-go items (try the roasted squash with pumpkin seeds).

I used to live next door to them when they were on 9th and C — they've been a good neighbor to me.

Barnyard Cheese Shop is at 168 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street. They are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed Wednesdays. (They also run Brix Wines right next door.)

Want to share an appreciation of an East Village business that remains open? Send us an email here. (We'll see how this goes! So far so good! Thank you for the suggestions!)

Brix Wine Shop now open on Avenue B

Brix Wine Shop opened this weekend at 168 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street.

The shop joins sister business and next-door neighbor Barnyard Cheese, which opened here in early December.

As we first reported back in November, owner Beatriz Arremony was moving Barnyard and Brix from Avenue C and Ninth Street to side-by-side storefronts on B.

Arremony told us that the move will allow them to expand their offerings.

"We will miss our corner of 9th and C and the great community that we've been part of for the last nine years but hope to continue to do the same on the B side," she said in November.

New location of Barnyard Cheese now open on Avenue B

Barnyard Cheese is up and running now at 168 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street.

As we first reported, owner Beatriz Arremony was moving both Barnyard and her Brix Wine shop from Avenue C and Ninth Street to side-by-side storefronts on B. (Brix is expected to be open by the end of the month.)

Arremony said that the move will allow them to expand their offerings. Barnyard will now finally have a full kitchen and unveil a number of new items beyond their meats, cheeses and sandwiches.

"We will miss our corner of 9th and C and the great community that we've been part of for the last nine years but hope to continue to do the same on the B side," she told us last month.

Barnyard Cheese and Brix Wine Shop moving from Avenue C to Avenue B

[Reader-submitted photo on Avenue B]

Avenue B will soon be home to two familiar East Village businesses: Barnyard Cheese and Brix Wine. The two sister shops will be side by side at 168 and 170 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street. (The Avenue B spaces were previously home to the bistro 26 Seats and the motorcycle apparel shop Klutch.)

Moving signs are up at the now-closed location of Barnyard Cheese Shop at 149 Avenue C between Ninth Street and 10th Street...

Brix Wine was just around the corner at 649 E. Ninth St. ...

"We are excited about the moves and the opportunity to have both stores side by side, which was always the dream but never quite attained on Avenue C, although we came close," Barnyard/Brix owner Beatriz Arremony told us via email.

Arremony said that the move will allow them to expand their offerings. Barnyard will now finally have a full kitchen and unveil a number of new items beyond their meats, cheeses and sandwiches. In addition, she said that Brix will offer small-group educational courses, including menu planning, as well as in-store tastings. (No word on an official opening date just yet — but soon.)

"We will miss our corner of 9th and C and the great community that we've been part of for the last nine years but hope to continue to do the same on the B side," she said.

Barnyard Cheese is back open on Avenue C

[Photo by Will Steacy via nycgo]

After a 10-day closure for various renovations/improvements (like a new AC system), Barnyard Cheese Shop reopened yesterday at 149 Avenue C between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street.

And we missed their early-evening deal…

Barnyard Cheese will reopen later this week

[Photo by Will Steacy via nycgo]

Last Tuesday we noted that Barnyard Cheese Shop at 149 Avenue C was closed until further notice.

A note on the door here between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street explained that that they were going "to make much needed improvements in order to be able to continue to bring you the quality food, service, and comfort that you deserve and that we strive to bring you every day."

We asked owner Beatriz Arremony for an update.

"We are actually installing a better AC system because our old one was not doing the job," she said. "It just got too hot for anything to operate, including our crew, and we needed board approval so I made the decision to shut it down and use the time to do deep cleaning, repainting and replacing a few pieces of equipment. We'll be back before the weekend."

Barnyard Cheese 'closed until further notice' on Avenue C

Barnyard Cheese Shop at 149 Avenue C between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street has shut its doors for now.

There's a note on the door, which offers the following explanation:

"Barnyard will be closed until further notice while we work in conjunction with our fellow building residents to make much needed improvements in order to be able to continue to bring you the quality food, service, and comfort that you deserve and that we strive to bring you every day.

"It is our hope that this closing will be brief and that we will be back and better than ever very soon."

Not sure what to make of that... aside from reading between the lines. As for improvements, there's nothing on file with the DOB to indicate any major construction project.

Barnyard, which sells a variety of meats and cheeses and soups and sandwiches, opened in November 2007.
