'Manhattan' in 'Materialists'

We hit up "Materialists" for some escape-from-the-heat-dome entertainment last week at the Village East by Angelika on Second Avenue at 12th Street.

Was pleasantly surprised to see/hear that Cat Power's 2012 song "Manhattan" (from her album Sun) plays at the beginning of the film (after an introductory scene) ... and showing Dakota Johnson walk by Cooper Union.

It's a great song and video, with a few shots from the East Village (where Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, once lived).

And here is the video, released in April 2013...

"Materialists" has a solid soundtrack with original music by Japanese Breakfast... as well as songs like "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" by Johnny Thunders and "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" by The Velvet Underground, among others.

In an interview with Spotify, "Materialists" writer-director Celine Song discussed the importance of music in her creative process.
Music is in the DNA of the film from the script phase. I write with music on, and usually I play one song on repeat — for "Materialists," the song on repeat was "Andalucia" by John Cale.
Song's previous film, the Oscar-nominated "Past Lives," was partially filmed in the East Village, as noted here.

Night falls on 'Manhattan'

A Saturday night Friday-at-5 special edition... former East Village resident Cat Power (aka Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshal) released this track, "Manhattan," on her 2012 record Sun ... an instantly great song that some saw as "a celebration and elegy at once."

Cat Power is the special guest on the Modest Mouse-Pixies bill this summer ... which includes two sold-out nights this Monday and Tuesday at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport.

Hope to see you again

Cat Power's excellent new record of covers, titled Covers, was released on Jan. 14. In this video, Powers (aka Chan Marshall, a one-time East Village resident) provides a mournful reinterpretation of "I'll Be Seeing You."

Cat Power's love letter to Manhattan includes stops in Tompkins Square Park and Max Fish

Stereogum has the new video clip from onetime East Village resident Cat Power today... Here's their take: "'Manhattan'" is an absolutely gorgeous wafting cloud of a song from Cat Power’s excellent 2012 album Sun, and its brand-new video effectively works as a love letter to the titular island."

Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, co-directed the video with Greg Hunt. You'll spot many very familiar locations throughout the song.

Per Stereogum: "This is a wonderful music video, and if you are not currently in New York, it will make you wish you were there."
