This block of 1st Street is trailer free for the time being after 6-plus years

Workers have removed the trailer that has sat here on First Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue these past seven years.

A reader who lives nearby said that crews will be starting water-main work on this block.

Since January 2012, the trailer served as an outdoor gallery via the Centre-fuge Public Art Project.

Centre-fuge was up to Cycle 23. (The art has not changed here since last August.)

The trailer was supposed to be relocated someplace nearby (I didn't walk around looking for it. Yet!)

Perhaps it will return to this spot. The Department of Transportation uses the trailer as an office for the East Houston Reconstruction project that is due for completion in 2077 (give or take a decade).

Anyway, here's a look back to May 2014... when Lexi Bella created a collection titled "Heroines of the Lower East Side" as part of the first Lower East Side History Month...

Trailer-outdoor gallery moving ahead of 1st Street road work

Workers will be moving the trailer that has sat on First Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue these past seven years ...

The trailer will depart this week for water-main work on this block. It's not known just how long it will be gone.

Since January 2012, the trailer has served as an outdoor gallery via the Centre-fuge Public Art Project.

Centre-fuge was up to Cycle 23. (The art has not changed here since last August.)

The Department of Transportation uses the trailer as an office for the long-delayed East Houston Reconstruction project that will — let's face it — never be finished, at least at the intersection of Houston and the Bowery.

Alumni Day: Cycle 19 of the Centre-fuge Public Art Project is underway

Work has started on the next round for the rotating outdoor gallery/construction trailer here along East First Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Here's more info via the Centre-Fuge website:

Cycle 19 is a collaborative effort by 10 artists, all of whom participated in a cycle on the trailer during 2015.

Artists represented in Cycle 19 are Andy Golub, Below Key, Hiss, Key Detail & Yu-Baba, Leon Rainbow, Pawn, Ramiro Davaro-Comas, Rez Shoalin, Smurfo, Vince Ballentine & Zero Productivity.

Established in 2012, Centre-fuge Public Art Project has re-purposed the DOT trailer into a rotating street gallery. Anyone has the opportunity to submit a mural proposal, in the form of a sketch, for an upcoming Cycle to be selected by our curators.

The goal of Centre-fuge is not only to re-beautify an incredible city, but also to encourage the community to express itself in a public forum, to alleviate and inspire, to express and reclaim. The project is dedicated in memory of friend, creator and Lower East Side neighbor, Mike Hamm. A recreation of Mike Hamm’s work is permanently installed on the eastern face of the trailer.

Once complete (the snow threw off their schedule), this will be on view through late April.

A look at the 'Heroines of the Lower East Side'

Been meaning to check out the completed work on Centre-fuge Cycle 13, the rotating outdoor gallery/construction trailer here along East First Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

All the art this time is by Lexi Bella … for a collection titled "Heroines of the Lower East Side" … as part of the first Lower East Side History Month.

Aside from the more recognizable portraits of Debbie Harry and Rosario Dawson … Bella honors the Russ Daughters (of Russ & Daughters fame) …

LaMama founder Ellen Stewart

Educator Catherine Ferguson, who founded the first Sunday school in New York City …

Hell-cat Maggie, "who fought alongside the Dead Rabbits and other Five Pointers against rival nativist gangs from the Bowery" …

… Lexi also paid tribute to her daughter Roxy, as BoweryBoogie pointed out
