The Chipotle on St. Mark's Place has permanently closed
Permanently closed signs now adorn the front doors of the Chipotle outpost at 19-25 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
An EVG tipster shared this news...
Chipotlers are instructed to visit the nearest location at 55 E. Eighth St.
I don't recall when this Chipotle opened. 2003? 2004? 2008? (The first one opened in the city on 44th Street and Third Avenue in 2003, per the Times.)
Chipotle recently announced that the company was closing 65 U.S. locations as part of a brand restructuring.
This article has some history of the buildings that stood here previously.

Chipotle announces itself in Stuy Town
The conversion of 286 First Ave. into a Chipotle continues… the signage arrived late last week here in Stuy Town near East 17th Street.
The storefront last housed the PCVST Broker Welcome Center, which moved up the block. Seems like maybe they could have combined these two ventures in the space?

Because several people started commenting randomly about Chipotle the other night
[Via Gothamist]
A Chipotle conversation broke out in the comments section in the post about Japadog closing Friday night. So this is for you!
Chipotle is introducing its new tofu-based burrito, sofritas, in NYC locations today.
We'll let Gothamist explain what goes into this. Or these.
Watery, chalky supermarket tofu this is not. The chain sources their product from Oakland-based Hodo Soy, which crafts artisanal tofu with beans sourced from organic, sustainable farms across the country. The partnership reflects the company's commitment to natural products, as well as the desire for the best-tasting product they can find. The quality stands out, both in the tofu's slightly chewy texture and the subtle nutty flavor.
To create the sofritas, the tofu gets seared and then ground into crumbles similar to the chorizo bits you might find in a taco. The tofu is also braised with chipotle chilies, roasted poblanos and lots of spices, in a treatment similar to the ones given to other protein offerings. The resulting product has a deep, earthy flavor with bright notes of cumin and lots of heat from the peppers.
Meanwhile, in the post last week about the 139th Chipotle opening around Union Square, I said that I had never eaten at a Chipotle.
Per EVG commenter Axis of Eville: "I can't comprehend the idea that someone hasn't had Chipotle."
It's true!
But I will try this new tofu thingy. Some day.

The 139th, or so, Chipotle to open near or around Union Square
Hey, what's this?
A Chipotle Mexican Grill is coming soon to 24 E. 12th St. just west of University Place. The space was last home to the Stand, a burger place that closed in May 2013, and at one time a Kinko's.
Our friend Alex at Flaming Pablum first noted this arrival on Monday night. As he wrote: "We need a Chipotle here like we need another bank branch."
According to the Chiptole website, there are seven other locations within a mile of here. (Twenty-nine within two miles.) A short few blocks from here there are locations at 19 St. Mark's Place, 117 E. 14th St., 55 E. Eighth Street, 510 Sixth Ave. … anyway, I'm rather indifferent toward Chipotle. Never tried their food.
But I have tried the food at Dorado, directly next door to the incoming Chiptole…

Despite Chipotle, (part of) Gonzalez y Gonzalez will live on
Back in January, the 22-year-old Gonzalez y Gonzalez on Broadway near Houston came to a dishonorable end. As reported, Chiptole was taking over the space.
And that new Chipotle — the city's 3,478th — opens tomorrow...
Meanwhile, as Eater reported in March, two former Gonzalez y Gonzalez bartenders were getting part of the space... and will reopen a smaller GyG with an entrance on Mercer, just north of the Angelika... But there were problems securing a liquor license ...
During the weekend, an anonymous source sent us the following missive:
Sounds pretty definite. So maybe you will be able to wolf down a margarita again before seeing a movie at the Angelika.

Many people might already know, or soon will find out, that Chipotle is opening next week at the Broadway entrance of the old Gonzalez y Gonzalez.
What many people might also not know, is Chipotle only took half of the original space, and that 2 of the original bartenders from Gonzalez y Gonzalez were able to secure the name and the other half of the space, entrance on 192 Mercer Street, and will be reopening, with bands, liquor license, giant sombrero and all, by the end of the year.
Sounds pretty definite. So maybe you will be able to wolf down a margarita again before seeing a movie at the Angelika.

The illegal Chipotle banner is gone
Yesterday, I got word that the Chipotle banner hanging from First Avenue and St. Mark's Place was coming down... Sure enough... as a walk by last evening revealed...
Flashback!
Per a reader yesterday:

Flashback!
Per a reader yesterday:
So I was living in that building when they put up the banner. Actually, I was lying in my underwear in bed when the guys putting it up drilled it into the wall directly outside my window (the one next to the bottom left hand corner of the banner).
I took it as one more sign that the East Village has become one big Starbucks -- a pantheon of ads and corporate chains. Solution?: I moved to Brooklyn.

Chipotle banner coming down on First Avenue?
Our friends at East Village Wines report that it looks as if the (ILLEGAL) Chipotle sign on First Avenue and St. Marks might be coming down. There's a big crane with some guy wobbling up top fidgeting with the sign. And there's nothing on the truck to indicate a replacement ad. (Photos anyone?)

That really big Chipotle ad on First Avenue is illegal, probably
Back in April, I made note of the ginormous Chipotle banner hanging from the building on the northeast corner of First Avenue and St. Mark's Place...
The Chipotle banner is one of several different ads in the East Village and West Village that the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) say is illegal. In a recent letter to Robert LiMandri, commissioner, New York City Department of Buildings, GVSHP Executive Director Andrew Berman noted that the Chipotle sign is illegal because "the property has no signage permits in-process or issued in the last year." The area was inspected and violations issued, but no hearing has been set.
The GVSHP was instrumental in getting that awful Kobe Bryant video game ad removed on Avenue A and 12th Street this spring... I hope the Chipotle ad makes a quick exit too... I hate having such a large fast-food banner on a main thoroughfare of the neighborhood...

Well, the sign hanging in the window said the new Chipotle on Fulton Street in District was opening today.... and the people walked up for lunch and....
Heh!
Will need to walk over a few blocks to Maiden and Pearl for your saturated fat and sodium!

Holy guacamole! Union Square's Chipotle opens tomorrow
The Chipotle Mexican Grill on 14th Street and Irving Place opens tomorrow, as the sign says.... Last evening, the place was open to people with some sort of pass or coupon or something.

Union Square getting burritofied
Here's the proof that a Chipotle Mexican Grill is, in fact, coming soon to the Zeckendorf Towers on the northwest corner of Irving Place and 14th Street.
Will be right next door to the new Bravo Pizza.

Chipotle under way; X'mas decorations likely not in stock
Looks as if some work has begun on the Chipotle that's coming into the former Rhyme & Reason space on 14th Street and Irving Place.
Of course, workers haven't removed all the old signs just yet.

Coming to Union Square: Chipotle Mexican Grill
Lois Weiss reports today that Chipotle Mexican Grill will open in the Zeckendorf Towers on the northwest corner of Irving Place and 14th Street. It's at the former site of Rhyme & Reason, the card shop, which closed last September. As I noted then: "What's to come? I have no idea! But it's a prime spot in NYUville. Also! There's a Duane Reade a block away on 14th and Third...and a Walgreens across the street. So this seems like a good spot for a drug store. Rite Aid?"
Anyway! Jeffrey Roseman of Newmark Knight Frank represented Chipotle. He told the Post: "Union Square is still buzzing and is a hot market." It will open at the end of the summer.
