Former Citibank branch on Avenue A hits the market

The for rent sign arrived last week at 50 Avenue A between Third Street and Fourth Street.

I was curious what this former Citibank branch would be going for... Unfortunately, the listing at the Heller Organization doesn't provide many details ... other than:

-Prime East Village Retail availability
-Retail and/or F&B uses welcome
-Very high street Retail & Restaurant traffic
-Top location for proximity to nightlife

It's deceptively large too at 4,400 square feet.

The former Chase branch on Avenue A at Second Street is looking for $49,947 a month (or $139 a square foot). That's one good reason why the space has sat empty since November 2015.

Back in July 2013, Citibank's former building neighbor, Native Bean, moved down the block to 36 Avenue A. At that time, the asking rent for the space was $9,500. Villacemita eventually took the storefront, opening in March 2015.

Citibank closed on Jan. 13.

50 Avenue A is no longer a Citibank branch

About 20 minutes after the Citibank branch shut down operations yesterday at 50 Avenue A, workers began removing the signage here between Third Street and Fourth Street...

Workers continued to haul out the remains of the bank branch today... while telling customers that they need to go to the Seward Park branch on Grand Street for banking business...

There is also a Citibank ATM inside the 7-Eleven on Avenue A at 11th Street (and a branch on First Avenue in Stuy Town)...

Citibank branch closes today on Avenue A

Back on Oct. 12, we shared the news that the Citibank branch at 50 Avenue A between Third Street and Fourth Street was closing in January.

And today is closure day — 3 p.m. to be exact.

The Citibank signage directs patrons to use the branch on Grand Street in Seward Park moving forward.

There has been an E.A.B. branch here since at least the early 1990s (if anyone can recall for sure). Citibank bought E.A.B. in 2001.

I asked a Citibank customer service rep here back in December about the closure. He said he didn't know anything — he was filling in from another branch — other that that the bank decided not to renew the lease upon the completion of its terms.

While we were talking, a woman who had been patiently waiting in a short line asked the teller if they had any 2017 calendars. The teller apologized and said that they didn't have any calendars. The customer said that she would return the next day to see if any calendars may have arrived. Meanwhile, a man — a regular on Avenue A and in Tompkins Square Park — sat sleeping in one of the chairs in the waiting area.

Live above the (soon-to-depart) Citibank at 50 Avenue A

As noted last month, the Citibank at 50 Avenue A is closing for good in January. Several readers commented that the building housing the bank branch is rather unattractive.

I never thought much about it. There is a residence in the building for sale. Perhaps it's much better from the inside. Here's a look at the listing via Streeteasy:

This beautifully renovated apartment, one of the loveliest two bedroom, two full bathrooms currently on the market in the east village, is spacious, serene, and light-filled. Three blocks from Tompkins Square Park, four from the F train, and a five minute walk to SoHo, it's location puts you in one of the most convenient and authentic spots from which to experience our magical city.

The new renovation includes sanded oak floors, a raised ceiling with painted beams, exposed brick in every room, open kitchen, mosaic tiles in the bathroom, and custom made, rustic fixtures and furniture, which can come with the apartment. Rustic wood wraps the roaring fireplace, there is washer/ drier setup in unit, stainless steel oven, microwave, dishwasher, air con units and a powerful heating system under the individual apartment's control. There is a ton of storage space in the apartment and additional small, medium and large storage units available in the basement.

Located in a super safe (a new camera intercom is going in this month), conveniently located building on Ave A and third, you are steps from a 24 hour grocery store with plenty of organic produce, one block from the newest and largest New York Sports Clubs, within two blocks of a 24 hour Duane Reade, Union Market, bookstores, art galleries, restaurants, community gardens bars, nightlife, theaters and so much more.

And two pics...

Asking price: $1.25 million. And there's an open house tomorrow afternoon from 2:30-4:30.

Citibank keeps telling people about their impending closure on Avenue A

Back on Oct. 12, we shared the news that the Citibank branch at 50 Avenue A between Third Street and Fourth Street is closing in January.

In recent days several EVG readers shared an email that Citi sent to them about the closure:

We are writing to let you know that the Citibank branch at 50 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009 will be closing on January 13, 2017, at 3:00 PM. We’d like to thank you for the opportunity to have served you here, and we assure you that you will receive the same great service, now at a new location.

This will have no effect on your account(s). It may be convenient for you to bank at our Seward Park branch located at 411 Grand St., New York, NY 10002 but remember, you can always visit any of our branches for your banking needs. Plus, you'll continue to enjoy easy access to your account(s), however you choose, with:

• Thousands of fee-free ATMs nationwide¹

• CitiPhone Banking®

• Citibank® Online

• Citi Mobile® App

• Mobile Check Deposit with your smartphone²

• CitiBusiness® Online

We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause you. Thank you again for your continued business.

An EVG reader asked a customer-service rep at the branch about the closing. The rep did not know why this was happening, and that few people were likely to use the Seward Park branch seeing as the Stuy Town location on First Avenue at 15th Street was more convenient for many of the bank's current patrons.

The Citibank branch on Avenue A is closing

The Citibank branch at 50 Avenue A between Third Street and Fourth Street is closing in January.

Citi customers started receiving letters yesterday about the development. An EVG reader shared this...

The letter, which does not offer a reason for the closure, states the last day on Avenue A will be Jan. 13. This customer's account will be transferred to the branch on Grand Street in Seward Park, which is not really convenient. (Why not the Stuy Town branch on First Avenue at least?)

Another EVG reader recalls that No. 50 was previously home to an E.A.B. branch. Citibank bought E.A.B. in 2001, according to The New York Times.

Per the reader:

In the 1990s, we loved E.A.B. and the people who worked there, especially the manager, John Ottino. Then at some point, Citibank bought out E.A.B., which upset us because everything became so corporate, but at least John and several other wonderful people who had worked for E.A.B. stayed on at the branch for a while, and at least we’ve been able to keep our original E.A.B. account numbers all these years. Because of constant employee turnover, this Citibank branch hasn’t provided a personal touch for many years, but it certainly has been convenient to bank there.

The Chase branch at 20 Avenue A closed last November. That space remains vacant.

A scene from the Union Square Citibank today

A man diligently counting and organizing mounds of pennies. Tough times. Per the reader who took the photo: "Poor guy is scraping pennies together and these clowns own half the city."

Thank you very little

And did you see Citi's fancy gatefold ad with Mary J. Blige in the New Yorker?

Meanwhile, in the Post today:

A new Citigroup scandal is engulfing Robert Rubin and his former disciple Chuck Prince for their roles in an alleged Ponzi-style scheme that's now choking world banking.

About that fruit salad at Citibank

Remember yesterday, when I did a post about fruit salad being sold for $2.50 in the lobby of the Citibank branch at 120 Broadway, kiddingly suggesting that the bank was only able to stay afloat by selling fruit...?

Anyway! First, the good news. It's really nice out today -- perfect fall weather. Oh, and Citibank isn't going out of business. The fruit salad was back today, and I took a closer look. (At the lobby, not the fruit salad.)

In my haste to transfer all my money ($5.76) to Chase yesterday after spotting the fruit salad sale....I overlooked a few things. Like! The fruit salad is only $2. And! All proceeds go to the Light the Night Walk sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

My apologies to Vikram Pandit (and same time tomorrow night for cards, VP?).

Is this something to worry about?

The Citibank branch on 120 Broadway in the Financial District is selling bowls of fruit salad in the lobby for $2.50.
