Physical therapy center set for former Dolphin Gym on 4th Street

The signage arrived yesterday for a new (Professional) physical therapy center at 244 E. Fourth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

The space has remained empty since the Dolphin Gym abruptly closed in March 2015. The original asking rent for the 5,800-square-foot space was $24,167.

No word if they will be seeking a beer-wine license just to have something to pair with the range-of-motion exercises for shoulder impingement syndrome.

The Dolphin Gym on East Fourth Street near Second Avenue closed without any warning on March 27.

The former gym is now for lease… for professional office space…



According to the listing, the 5,800-square-foot space is asking $24,167.

The notices from Dolphin that remain on the door say that your remaining membership will be honored at Synergy Fitness on East 14th Street or Mulberry Street… or Ludlow Fitness on Delancey…



Not sure how that is working out, so to speak, three months later for people with Dolphin memberships. One former Dolphingoer told us that the Synergy on East 14th Street near Second Avenue keeps irregular hours and, despite the sign, is not open 24 hours…

We spotted workers removing items from the now-closed Dolphin Gym on East Fourth Street near Second Avenue yesterday morning… the guys on the scene said that they didn't know why the gym shuttered without any warning to members on Friday…

I went there today and one of the managers was there closing up this morning. I asked what happened — he said that only part of the gym space was zoned for commercial use, the rest was for residential use. He said no one had bothered them about that in 15 years, but now they were starting to get complaints from the city so they had to abruptly shut down.

A sign on the door says that Synergy Fitness (with two locations on 14th Street) will honor the Dolphin memberships.

Several readers have pointed out that the Dolphin Gym on East Fourth Street near Second Avenue closed without much warning yesterday.

One reader said that she was in the gym yesterday morning.

"I said 'See you tomorrow!' and not a peep. Went by [last night] — totally padlocked, but not by the Marshal."

According to the sign, memberships will be honored at the Synergy Fitness on East 14th Street just west of Second Avenue.



Said another reader: "I went to Synergy, by the way, and they let me workout but they didn't really know what's going on."

No sweat? Former Dolphin Gym for lease

Signs up are now at the former Dolphin Gym on Avenue B near Second Street... As you may recall, the gym quickly shuttered back in February.



Anyway, um, not sure how viable retail is here... in the basement of a former gym? (Sounds like the perfect home for the next Mad Dog Room!) No details on the lease. The number belongs to Skyline Development. No listing posted just yet. I haven't heard the Duane Reade expansion rumor in some time. Perhaps it's time to revive that one.
