Plywood comes down at 131 Avenue A to reveal new cafe Baci e Vendetta

The plywood came down yesterday to reveal Baci e Vendetta, the new wine bar-cafe at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

This prime space across from Tompkins Square Park was the 10 Degrees Bistro until the fall of 2015 ... and the Flea Market Cafe before that.

Back in December, CB3 OK'd a beer-wine license for the owners of Shoolbred's and Kingston Hall (and formerly Ninth Ward) on Second Avenue. The CB3 meeting notes refer to the new establishment as "a New Orleans Cajun restaurant."

Baci e Vendetta, Italian for Kisses and Revenge, doesn't have much of a Cajun ring to it. Anyway, we're not sure at the moment who's behind this venture that debuted last night.

The space looks nice...

Here's a look at the food and beverage menu... (click on images to go big)

According to the Baci website, these are the hours:

Sunday – Thursday: 9 am – midnight
Friday – Saturday: 9 am – 2 am
Brunch — Sat – Sun: 9 am – 4pm

Plywood arrives for 131 Avenue A; new Cajun restaurant on the way?

Workers yesterday erected plywood around 131 Avenue A, the former 10 Degrees Bistro and Flea Market Cafe between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

Back in December, CB3 OK'd a beer-wine license for the owners of Shoolbred's and Kingston Hall (and formerly Ninth Ward) on Second Avenue. The CB3 meeting notes refer to the new establishment as "a New Orleans Cajun restaurant." (Per the meeting notes, the applicants were seeking a full-liquor license; they also faced opposition from several nearby block associations.)

The space has been sitting dormant in recent months. There had reportedly been gas issues in the building, which ultimately led to the eviction/closure of next-door neighbors Nino's and Yoshi Sushi. Perhaps landlord Citi Urban has those gas issues resolved.

Team behind Shoolbred's and Ninth Ward vying for 10 Degrees Bistro space on Avenue A

[EVG photo from September]

Nic Ratner and Robert Morgan, owners of three establishments on Second Avenue — Shoolbred's, Ninth Ward and Kingston Hall — look to be expanding their reach to Avenue A.

According to public documents (PDF!) on file at the CB3 website, Ratner and Morgan are applying for a new liquor license for the former 10 Degrees Bistro and Flea Market Cafe space at 131 Avenue A.

There aren't many details, such as a proposed name and menu served, on the questionnaire filed ahead of Monday night's CB3 SLA committee meeting. The paperwork shows 8 tables good for 31 seats as well as an L-shaped, 15-foot bar. The proposed hours are Sunday-Thursday 1 p.m. to 2 a.m.; until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

As we first reported on Aug. 18, the landlord took legal possession of the restaurant between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street. A sign arrived the next day noting that 10 Degrees was closed for maintenance. They never reopened.

The proprietors of Ten Degrees Bar, which remains open around the corner on St. Mark's Place, took over operations of the Flea Market Cafe in March 2013 ... changing the name to 10 Degrees Bistro in December 2013.

The December CB3-SLA committee meeting is Monday night at 6:30 in the CB3 office, 59 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery.

10 Degrees Bistro won't be reopening on Avenue A

The for lease sign arrived on the front door yesterday.

As we first reported on Aug. 18, the landlord took legal possession of the restaurant at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street.

A sign arrived the next day noting that 10 Degrees was closed for maintenance…

Also on Aug. 19, 10 Degrees took to Facebook to explain the situation… renegotiating terms with the landlord…

The Marshal seizes 10 Degrees Bistro on Avenue A

A reader sent along this photo from last night, showing that the landlord has taken legal possession of 10 Degrees Bistro at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street.

There isn't any information available about the closure at the moment. This doesn't necessarily mean the end for the restaurant… but it's not a great sign either.

On Avenue A, Flea Market Cafe is now Ten Degrees Bistro

Back on Thanksgiving, we noticed that a worker was painting over the Flea Market Cafe sign on Avenue A...

And that's the last time we thought about it… until EVG regular Bayou pointed out the restaurant's chalkboard sign from Sunday … with a new name — Ten Degrees Bistro...

Ten Degrees management made the announcement on their Facebook page back on Dec. 1.

To all our patrons & friends, we would like to announce that the bistro we purchased last Spring, The Flea Market Bistro, was finally approved a name change and hence forward shall be known as TEN DEGREES BISTRO. YAAY..so excited!!!!! ..we have fantastic new additions to the Brunch and dinner menu...

The folks at Ten Degrees Bar around the corner on St. Mark's took over operations of the restaurant ... with a reopening this past March.

Here is the Bistro's new menu.

Flea Market Cafe closed in August 2011 after all that arson business.

Flea Market Cafe reopens today, and here's the menu

[March 2]

The new-look Flea Market Cafe was unveiled at the beginning of March, as we noted here. A few readers and regulars of the bistro grumbled about the cleaned-up interior — someone even thought that it looked like a "Pier 1 showroom" now.

But how about the menu? It's now online. (Click on images to enlarge.)

The Flea Market opens tonight... the new owners are from 10 Degrees around the corner on St. Mark's Place.

The Flea Market Cafe closed back in the fall for renovations... the paper is off the front windows now...

The folks at Ten Degrees around the corner on St. Mark's are now operating the restaurant. There's not much information on the Cafe's website, except for the opening date — March 11.

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken says hello (sort of); Flea Market Cafe closes for renovations

Didn't notice this one... On Avenue A, the concepts keep changing at the former Avenue A Sushi, which closed in the spring of 2010. It has been the Avenue A Bistro Bar. The Avenue A Bistro Cafe. Anyway, it's now called La Lune, a hookah bar serving Lebanese cuisine...

Oh. Just a photo of these guys repainting the Phebe's sign on the Bowery at East Fourth Street on Saturday...

And on Avenue A, the Flea Market Cafe is closed for renovations, as the sign shows...

To be honest, we've lost track of what's happening with the cafe. There have been a lot of rumors about its future, including new ownership.

New owners, hours in store for Flea Market Cafe on Avenue A

We continue to look at some of the items on this month's CB3/SLA agenda on June 18. According to documents on the CB3 website (PDF!), the principals behind L'Orange Bleue on Broome Street will be taking over the Flea Market Cafe on Avenue A between St. Mark's and East Ninth Street. (L'Orange Bleue, a Moroccan-French restaurant, closed last year after a 14-year run.)

The documents show that the new proposed hours are 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday-Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. So apparently the new variation of this cafe will be open for breakfast and lunch. And, at least based on the application, it doesn't appear that the menu might change too much: The principals describe the food here as "French Bistro Cuisine." (Not sure about a name change. The application reads, "Trade name (DBA): Flea Market Cafe.")

As for their old place on Broome Street, New York magazine described it this way: "L'Orange Bleue offers a cheery balance of tempered exoticism, local Eurocharm, and American thrift."

Flea Market Cafe reopening later today

[Melanie Neichin]

Melanie at East Village Corner brings us the news that the Flea Market Cafe will reopen a little later today (this per an employee there) on Avenue A. She took the above photo there this afternoon. Looks like workers were able to clean up the place nicely. Meanwhile, sources say that yesterday's fire remains under investigation.

Was the fire at Flea Market yesterday suspicious?

That's the gossip anyway surrounding yesterday afternoon's fire at Flea Market Cafe on Avenue A. A few readers noted that there were a lot of FDNY brass on the scene for a blaze that firefighters extinguished in 25 minutes or so. Bob Arihood notes that the NYPD Crime Scene unit stayed around until midnight or so. (Bob's first post on the fire is here.)

No word just yet when the restaurant will reopen.

[Updated] Report: Fire at Flea Market Cafe on Avenue A this afternoon

That's the word from Patrick Hedlund at DNAinfo, who reports that a small fire started inside the cafe near St. Mark's Place this afternoon. The fire broke out while the restaurant was closed. The FDNY had the blaze under control in less than 25 minutes. Paramedics treated one firefighter at the scene for minor injuries, according to DNAinfo.
