The Yaffa mural returns to view

EVG reader bayou happened by 97 St. Mark's Place this morning to see that workers have removed the Google ad that had been covering the Yaffa mural the past three-plus weeks...

Just in time for the restaurant to be permanently closed.

EVG reader Allen Semanco also shared photos...

... and he notes that workers are touching up the mural...

Yaffa Cafe will be back, though likely without its backyard garden

Yaffa Cafe is officially gone; back garden dismantled

A Google ad now covers the iconic Yaffa Cafe mural on St. Mark's Place

Several readers have pointed out that this Google App ad is now up outside Yaffa Cafe, the 31-year-old restaurant at 97 St. Mark's Place...

A film crew was here last Friday ... and they put up and removed the banner in about 20 minutes...

[Photo from Friday by Allen Semanco]

We reached out to the folks at Yaffa to find out more about this. Unfortunately, the restaurant is currently (and temporarily) closed. The DOH closed them last Friday after failing an inspection. And Yaffa's phone is currently not in service.

Anyway, at this point, we're unsure if the ad is temporary or permanent.

Updated 5:13 p.m.

It looks pretty permanent. The ad is framed and screwed into the building, so to speak…

Updated 9/12

A little history of the mural, which went up in 1993. It is a self-portrait of Lika Ramati, (former?) co-owner with her husband, Amir, of Simone and Yaffa Cafe.

Updated 10:28 a.m.

Yaffa says the mural will be return...

Today in Google Street View car sightings on 2nd Avenue

Spotted near East Fourth Street by Derek Berg.

Now everyone please be on your best behavior so that the car doesn't inadvertently capture you pulling down your pants or making gestures that might be construed as the middle finger. Anyway, that's so 2007!

Google Glass is the lead sponsor for the 2015 New Museum Triennial

Via the EVG inbox ... from the New Museum at 235 Bowery...

The New Museum announced today that Google Glass will be the Lead Sponsor of the 2015 Triennial exhibition. The Triennial, a signature initiative of the New Museum, is the only recurring exhibition in New York City devoted to international, emerging artists. The Triennial provides an important platform for a new generation that is shaping the current discourse of contemporary art and the future of culture around the world.

The 2015 Triennial will open next February 2015 and will occupy the entire Museum ...

As part of this partnership, the New Museum will launch a visitor engagement app using Google Glass. The New Museum will introduce Glassware that enhances visitor engagement at the Triennial and enables the public to share their experiences.

Happy birthday Keith Haring

If you've been to Google today... then you probably saw the Google Doodle honoring Keith Haring on what would have been his 54th birthday today. Haring died of AIDS-related illnesses in 1990 at the age of 31.

And an EVG repost from March 12, 2009:

Blogger Jack Brummet at All This is That today posts a Polaroid that he received in 1982...It's a shot of Keith Haring's mural on Houston and the Bowery....

The photo was affixed to a postcard and mailed to him from San Francisco...the former NYC resident was living in Seattle. You can see the postmark on the bottom left of the photo....

And now, the East Village via Google's augmented-reality glasses

Our friends at Wheeeeeeee! shared the video below... Nick Bilton at the Times has been writing about Google's sorta-secret augmented-reality glasses — Project Glass. Yesterday, Google shared its first venture into wearable computing in this video that shows the potential uses of the glasses... and the East Village has a starring role...

Please discuss.

Meanwhile, will someone please check on Jeremiah Moss?

Shake Shack and "Hale and Heardy" among the top-10 2009 Google searches in New York City

Drumroll!

1. cuny portal
2. duane reade locations
3. mta trip planner
4. seamless web
5. conedison.com
6. hopstop
7. hale and heardy
8. shake shack
9. nyu home
10. queens library

Why would anyone have to Google "Duane Reade locations"? Just walk two blocks in any direction and you should find one.

Also!

As EV Grieve reader T.E.V.B, who passed this along, noted, "C'mon people, learn to spell 'hearty!'"

What did other cities look up...?

Please call for help....

Good lord I'm still futzing around with Google 2001...Oh, look who's playing at Brownies!

Remember when...?

Google is celebrating its 10th birthday. In honor of this, they've brought back their oldest available index. Take a look back at Google in January 2001.

Better yet, search for some vile things in the East Village that arrived after January 2001...and its as if those things never existed! (Search for Pinkberry and see what you find...) Oh, we can pretend. I've just started playing around with this...there goes the rest of the day....
