2nd Street freeze out
While not quite the extent of the World Famous Icicle Audi (see here) just yet, an apparent leaky pipe under part of Second Street is causing a frozen zone between Avenue B and Avenue C.
EVG reader Bill Buchen, who lives on the block, said that the leak/flood started on Dec 23. Residents on the block called 311. The NYPD came. ConEd came. The DEP came. Crews made repairs.
Per Bill: "It's still not fixed! Cars getting frozen in place. It's epic!"

Report: City tickets cars stuck in ice on East 12th Street
Yesterday, EVG regular Andrew Adam Newman on Ave C spotted this Saabsicle and several other cars frozen to the ground on East 12th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B… apparently the result of a crack in the street the city won't bother to repair.
Despite the predicament that these drivers found themselves in (Hi, do you have a blowtorch that I can borrow?), the city reportedly handed out parking tickets to the owners of these cars.
Per the Post:
A street leak frozen by this week’s bone-chilling “polar vortex” trapped cars parked on East 12th Street near Avenue A, where residents were forced to sit in cars or risk getting a fine [this] morning.
Some drivers were handed $65 tickets — which neighbors called just plain cold-hearted.
“I couldn’t get my car out right away and when I told them that they were like, ‘I already started writing the ticket,” said David Griffith, a 29-year-old, who works in the nightlife biz.

Saabsicle discovery this morning on East 12th Street
Apparently a pipe broke on East 12th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B sometime recently... Andrew Adam Newman on Ave C noted the Saabsicle (his term!) ... and several other cars in the same predicament.
Sucks. But it's likely much less off a disaster than our dear old friend... the Icicle Audi of East Second Street... back in the balmy days of the winter of January 2011...

Winter Friday Flashback: On East Second Street, a sink hole and an Icicle Audi
On Fridays this winter, and probably spring and summer ... we'll post one of the 16,000-plus EVG, uh, posts from yesteryear, like this one from Jan. 23, 2011...
-----
Thanks to RyanAvenueA for this shot... of a large hole in the middle of Second Street near Second Avenue...
Come spring, we'll move the cars, throw around some deck chairs, and open a Shake Shack here.
Oh, and here's a closer look at the new icicle Audi model.
-----
Postscript. The Icicle Audi, of course, went on to international acclaim. From Jan. 25...
-----
H/t to esquared™ for reminding me about this anniversary.

Cool off today with a souvenir piece of the Icicle Audi ice
As you likely remember, the biggest story this — or any other, really — year was the Icicle Audi on East Second Street. (No? All you need to know is right here.)
As we exclusively reported on Jan. 24, the owner of the Icicle Audi was able to chip away enough of the ice-covered Audi to move it... and he left behind Icicle Audi ice for various souvenir collectors. Like us!
Instead of selling a souvenir chunk of ice then – when the eyes of the world were on the Icicle Audi... we waited until it got hot out ... when people may be more desperate for a chunk of ice — a liquid of unknown burst NYC water pipe origins frozen into this solidtoxic state. And taking up room in the freezer.
So, behold — with a newspaper for authenticity ...
Bid early and often — and quickly. I've already heard from those guys at Death & Co.
Bonus January flashback!

Not the Icicle Audi
We received an e-mail from a reader yesterday noting that the ice-free Icicle Audi was parked again on East Second Street...
Sure, it's an Audi, but it's not the Audi.
In fact, there's no more Icicle Audi! The Post had an article earlier today about the Icicle Audi owner trading in his Icicle Audi for a new car.
And a quick look back at the VERY FIRST photo of the Icicle Audi taken on Jan. 23 ... courtesy of RyanAvenueA ...
And I still have the Icicle Audi ice for sale...
You could buy this or an old Staten Island Ferry.

Now on evBay: Bid on a chunk of the Icicle Audi's ice
Yesterday, the owner of the Icicle Audi on Second Street was able to chip away enough at his car to move it...
And much of the Audi ice was left behind for souvenir hunters...
Given how popular this story became (thanks for checking in, News Channel 7 in Greenville, S.C.!)...
We have a smaller chunk of the genuine Icicle Audi that will hit evBay later today... But first, here's a look...
We'll throw in yesterday's Post too... Bidding will start around €400 - €600 ($544 - $816).
In any event, the Icicle Audi Ice Chunk is a must for any buffs of history, local TV news, weather, ice, broken pipes or exotic cocktails.

Under watchful eye of TV news crews, the Icicle Audi is freed
TV news crews are still on the scene of this afternoon's biggest story involving a frozen car... Anyway, the DEP is on East Second Street to repair the underground water break...
Meanwhile, crews moved the Icicle Audi a few hundred feet down Second Second... where several photographers were taking the car's picture...

Meanwhile, on Seventh Street, the East Village's original frozen car asks, 'What about me?'
On Jan. 16, we posted these photos by EV Grieve contributor Bobby Williams on Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...
Same situation has what happened on East Second Street yesterday... broken underground pipe results in frozen car.
But, outside this post, there was zero media coverage. And the Icicle Audi gets on the local TV news, the Post, Gothamist...
Reps for this car contacted us to see what we could do about getting it some love and attention. Anyone?

Why the East Village will be remembered for the Great Winter of 2010-2011
Yesterday, courtesy of RyanAvenueA, we learned about a sinkhole and an Icicle Audi on Second Street...
Gothamist has more on the story ... As they note, the car has come to symbolize the Great Arctic Blast of Jan. 24, 2011©. Gothamist spotted three news vans parked on that block this morning.
Meanwhile, CBS 2 tracks down the car's owner, who has the right attitude about material possessions: “It could be worse like if that was me or a family member covered in ice that wouldn’t be good; so it’s all relative.” (A leaky pipe under the street caused this, per CBS 2.)

The Icicle Audi is the latest East Village ride to become an Icon for the Great Winter of 2010-2011©. Our bike, which we never really named.
