[Updated] Dream of a vanishing Joe Strummer

I had a dream recently that someone painted over the Joe Strummer mural on the side of Niagara. And when I saw it — while inexplicably riding a bike the wrong direction on Seventh Street (no comments! This was a dream!) — a new mural was in progress. It was black and purple and looked like a bruise.

And it was going to be Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones.

I took photos and rushed home to post the photos. (Traveling now with the traffic, harumpf!) I was in such a hurry, I didn't stop at the site of a construction accident. (No one was injured.)

As far as I can remember, this was my first blog-related dream. I recalled a few dreams that Jeremiah Moss shared at Vanishing New York, like the one about A Fontana Shoe Repair.

Unbeknownst to me he has a new blog — Dreams of the Vanishing New York.

Per the description: "Dreams that come in sleep about lost New York places, people, and things, about anxieties and wishes for what could be lost or regained."

Updated: Oh! Jeremiah posted my dream yesterday after I mentioned it in an email.

Joe Strummer's nose job

Noticed this the other day on the Joe Strummer mural outside Niagara on Seventh Street and Avenue A...

Someone added a moustache and swastika last month...

Anyway, all gone. Joe got touched up a bit yesterday afternoon as these photos by Bobby Williams show...

...and last night...

A letter to Joe Strummer

On Dec. 22, the ninth anniversary of Joe Strummer's death, fans left candles and flowers outside his mural on Seventh Street at Avenue A. Someone also left a letter for Joe. Dave on 7th took a picture of it.

R.I.P. Joe Strummer
"If you want to see the heroic,
Look at those who can love in return
for hatred...
If you want to
see the brave, look
to those who can
forgive..."

[Updated] Remembering Joe Strummer

We saw that several people stopped by the Joe Strummer mural today on the 9th anniversary of his death... a few people left flowers, candles and notes here on Seventh Street at Avenue A...

UPDATED

Dave on 7th notes the scene at the mural this morning... made it through last night's rain...

Joe Strummer died 9 years ago today

Joe Strummer died on this date in 2002. He reportedly had an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. He was 50.

In November 2003, REVOLT painted a mural in honor of the former Clash frontman on the side of Niagara on Seventh Street at Avenue A. (You can watch a video of the making of this here.)

Since then, I've taken far too many photos of the mural, which REVOLT updated in February 2009...

Look, Smokin' Joe! (Eh, sorry...)

There's always something comforting about seeing the mural there... looking rather calm about anything going on around it...

Let's end this with a Strummer solo number from Aki Kaurismäki's "I Hired a Contract Killer" from 1990...

Joe Strummer mural on Seventh Street helping sell an apartment — on 11th Street

In an otherwise innocuous ad for an expensive apartment, one thing stands out...

The three-bedroom unit in question is on East 11th Street. Not exactly close to Seventh Street and Avenue A, where the Joe Strummer mural resides. Perhaps the realtor should have "The Magnificent Seven" playing on the site too.

Joe Strummer mural restored

As we learned last week, artist Angel "LA II" Ortiz added his personal touch to the Joe Strummer mural on Seventh Street and Avenue A...

Since then, the mural has been touched up...

It has been a busy time for Ortiz, a veteran artist who once worked with Keith Haring. NYC the Blog has more on Ortiz here. Meanwhile, DNAinfo reported last week that the NYPD arrested Ortiz for tagging a building on Second Avenue ... the night before the LES native's opening at his show at the Dorian Grey Gallery on East Ninth Street.

Anyway, you've probably seen his LA ROC tag around a lot of late... I counted 12 before I stopped...

The wrong profile: Joe Strummer gets tagged

As a reader noted in the comments, someone tagged the Joe Strummer mural outside Niagara on Seventh Street and Avenue A a few days ago... added a little color to the lapels and sleeves ...

Remembering Joe Strummer

I was happy to see to see that a few people came by the Joe Strummer mural tonight at Seventh Street and Avenue A to pay their respects on the anniversary of his death....

Joe Strummer, Dec. 22, 2002

Thanks to East Village Radio for the reminder... today marks the eighth anniversary of Joe Strummer's death...

You can watch the video that includes the mural's creation here... (Someone disabled the embedding...)

Avenue A's new Black Market

Missed this yesterday at Gothamist:

The former Pizza Shop next to Niagra on Avenue A will be called Black Market.

Black market?

Keeping with the Clash theme perhaps?

Joe Strummer gets a splash of Niagara

A little something extra was added to the Joe Strummer mural on the side of Niagra at Seventh Street and Avenue A the other day.

Before:

Now:

Makes sense that Niagara wanted its name included on the mural — given how often fans/tourists takes its picture (though why wasn't this included when the mural was created in 2003?)...Meanwhile, there was a post/discussion on the mural last week at the Clash Blog

Black market Clash: "This is Radio Clash" mural painted over on Third Street

Been meaning to do a post on graffiti legend Ezo's Clash-inspired mural on Third Street between Avenue B and Avenue C. It's on the wall outside the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Because of its more remote location in the East Village, this work didn't receive the same love as Joe Strummer on Seventh Street and Avenue A. I liked it just the same, of course.

Anyway, I'm sad to say, it's gone. Painted over. Black.

Well, Ezo's Clash mural had been tagged. And it was starting to chip away in spots... Couldn't it have been touched up like the Strummer mural earlier this year? In any event, we're hopeful something equally inspired goes up in its place.

Mind Joe, please

Good morning. Construction on Seventh Street near Avenue A.

DO NOT look at the guy standing there with a camera...

And the truck matches the mural...
