Making headlines in ad shoots today

Shooting a spot today in Tompkins Square Park for Kiehl's... including a model with a prop newspaper titled The Pear Street Journal. (Wish we knew before that this wasn't a real journalistic enterprise. We pitched them several bylines, including "Why you should never out Avocado Eye Cream on toast."

P.S.
You can read about the pear tree that was outside Kiehl's on 13th Street and Third Avenue right here.

3rd Avenue penthouse cottage returns to market as a $17k monthly rental

[EVG file photo]

Last Aug. 27, the penthouse home(s) atop the building that houses Kiehl's on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 13th Street caught fire...

Despite how it looked, the damage was minimal to the cottage that had just sold for $4.4 million.

You still have a chance to live here, though. As the Post reported, the 1,972-square-foot rooftop duplex (apartment 4CD) with three bedrooms and three bathrooms is now available as a rental — for $17k a month.

Here's part of the listage action via Corcoran:

An open kitchen features stainless steel appliances including Miele dishwasher and Wolf range, along with a dramatic Thermador vented range hood. Hand-painted Victorian-era aluminum casted balusters line the staircase leading up to the stunning master bedroom suite.

Enter this second level through the spectacular solarium, sun-flooded during the days and great for stargazing at night through its numerous skylights. This well-designed suite is complete with a spa-like master bath featuring a deep-soaking tub and separate steam shower, a windowed study/dressing area, and corner fireplace. The two spacious terraces flank the second level, the larger featuring an outdoor wood-burning fireplace, retractable awning, and four exposures with views of the Empire State Building. There is also a new irrigation system in place.

To refresh your memory...

The unit is available is furnished or unfurnished.

As for the cause of the fire, the Post heard that it was a faulty hot tub on the roof.

Your dreams of living in a penthouse cottage above Kiehl's are dashed for now

Back in June we noted that those cottage-style penthouses atop the building that houses Kiehl's on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 13th Street were on the market with an asking price of $4.4 million.

Well, the place is now in contract, Curbed reported today:

When reached for comment, Corcoran listing broker Tamir Shemesh couldn't give up what the three-bedroom pad is selling for, only that it's "going for a very good price" and that "both the seller and buyer are very happy." We'd be happy, too, if those were our new digs.

Well, maybe this cabin will return to market.

Kiehl's now has its own Captain America comic

[Via Kiehl's/Marvel Comics]

Kiehl's has hooked up with Marvel Comics for its own Captain America: Transformation & Triumph comic book, USA Today reported yesterday.

Apparently Kiehl's president Chris Salgardo is a big comic book fan/geek and reached out to Marvel about a partnership.

The comic is available in the store and online to coincide with the launch of a "Heavy Lifting" moisturizer, an anti-aging skin treatment for men.

And the plot (of the comic book, not the anti-aging skin treatment for men):

Written by William Harms and featuring artists Angel Unzueta and Ty Templeton, the story takes place in Cap's past but also his present, where he battles Cobra, a member of the Serpent Society, attacks the original Kiehl's store at 3rd Avenue and 13th Street ... thinking that the remnants of the old super-soldier serum are in the basement.

Not to spoil it, but Cobra eventually has to move after a developer buys his building and terminates his lease.

Oh! And a look at the comic book ...

This morning at the Mystery Lot

Uh-oh! Workers arrived at the scene ... However, well-placed Mystery Lot sources believe the work is being done on the Kiehl's building on the corner of 13th Street and Third Avenue here... and not the Mystery Lot... Photo by Shawn Chittle.

Why you can eat on (part of) Third Avenue today

Today marks the end of the 2nd Annual Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. Per the Kiehl's news release:

Our very own Chris Salgardo, President of Kiehl’s USA, and Alain de Cadenet, Le Mans racer and ESPN “Speed Channel” Host, will lead riders from Pennsylvania to Massachusettes to New York City, with five stops along the way. The group of riders includes Tyson Beckford, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tricia Helfer, Justin Chatwin, Katee Sackhoff, Teddy Sears, Christopher Redman, Marguerite Moreau, Paul Cox, Paul d’Orleans, Conrad Leach and many other cherished friends of Kiehl’s.

So expect about 160 bikers on Third Avenue today rolling up to the Kiehl's HQ at 13th Street ... Meanwhile, you can eat stuff on Third Avenue ... All this is going on from noon to 4 p.m.

Here's the menu... including cupcakes from Magnolia ...

Hope that everyone is respectful of the Mystery Lot!

The menu also includes Cherrywood-smoked pork with chili vinegar and "bad ass chips" with blue cheese dressing ... and Sixpoint Brevity Belgian Wit...

P.S.
Anyone remember the last time that we saw Tyson Beckford on a motorcycle? (Go here for the answer)

Kiehl's knows plywood

Our very own Kiehl's is expanding, opening a store on Lexington and 64th Street. You can read more about it at Racked.

Meanwhile, I recently walked into the flagship Kiehl's on Third Avenue and 13th Street... and I thought I had entered, say, Barneys.

Price cutting atop Kiehl's

In early December, we wrote about 203 E. 13th St. #PH4B, the rooftop pad on Third Avenue above Kiehl's...it's a fine looking home that was going for $1.265 million.

Well, thank God that you didn't buy it then.

Why?

Last Thursday, the owners slashed the price by $200,000 (16 percent) to $1,065,000. With that money you just saved, you can buy some shampoo at Kiehl's.

The official listing is here. Streeteasy has some history.

Speaking of rooftops: 'Own a piece of history in this boutique condo Penthouse of the historic Kiehl's Building'

I've always been intrigued by the cabin-looking home atop the Kiehls's building on 13th Street and Third Avenue. Here are two photos from a post that Scouting NY did on the house earlier this year...I read somehwere that one of the Coen Brothers used to live here...

Anyway, I came across a listing for 203 E. 13th St. #PH4B. Apparently this one has been on the market for some time. This PH doesn't include the cabin, though you at least have use of part of that rooftoop space...

According to that listing:

Own a very unique penthouse apartment in the Historical Kiehl's Building built in 1851. This astonishing loft like large one bedroom is in pristine condition with soaring 11 ft ceilings and is flooded with sun. This stunning apartment has original exposed brick & enormous brick arched windows all facing south. It comes equipped with a washer/dryer, built in security system and a beautifully renovated kitchen and bath. The spiral staircase leads to your own very private roof garden oasis of over 400 sq ft! Pets are welcome. Come and see for yourself. Own a piece of history in this boutique condo Penthouse of the historic Kiehl's Building now called Pear Tree Place named after the pear tree that once grew just beyond the front door.

This space can be yours for $1.265 million (715 square feet). But that price doesn't include the hellacious views that you'll have of the mystery lot next door!

"Oh, you know, it's bank, nail salon, bank, nail salon, bank, nail salon"

I missed this piece in the Observer yesterday titled, "Chloe Sevigny, Miss East Village, Waxes on Changing Nabe and Embattled Beatrice"

It's about Ms. Sevigny being at the 158th-anniversary party for Kiehl's.

A few snippets:

"If Kiehl's were a woman, she'd be Chloe!" the president of Kiehl's, Chris Selgardo, declared to the Daily Transom. Mr. Selgardo, a bulky, muscular man with a thick black beard, was dressed casually in jeans, a muscle shirt and a blazer. "We love Chloe. Someone like Chloe, she's just so East Village."

And!

Given that Ms. Sevigny and the store are both residents of the East Village, we asked Mr. Selgardo how he felt about his little apothecary being surrounded by all the shiny glass buildings sprouting up in the area. (One Ten Third, for instance, which has gone up directly across the street.)

"Yes, that was new, that was definitely new," he replied. "The Village has changed, but it's not so bad. New York is cleaned up. But, I think, more so than any other part of the city, it remains very spirited and very interesting. But, you know, I don't want to see a Pottery Barn on the corner."

And Ms. Sevigny? How does the 34-year actress think the neighborhood has changed?

"Oh, you know, it's bank, nail salon, bank, nail salon, bank, nail salon," she replied. "The Subway across the street from Veselka, it's just an eyesore. The bigger chains coming in everywhere, it's depressing. You know what really bugs me about the neighborhood, actually? The students! The N.Y.U. kids and they've opened an SVA dorm near my house, so now it's even more."

NOTED

From a tipster...because I really don't read Allure:

Talk about your leggy blondes: Kiehl's has thought of a creative way to hype their relaunch of Close-Shaverettes Simply Mahvelous Legs Shave Cream, ($15.50). They've enlisted the help of vertically-gifted Svetlana Pankratova, the woman who holds the record for having the longest legs in the world. (They're a whopping 4'4" — that's her legs alone. Keep in mind that the average woman is only about 5'3" from head to toe!) If you're in the New York area tomorrow, you can see those gams for yourself at Kiehl's East Village flagship store, where Pankratova will be on hand from 12 PM to 5PM to demonstrate the product and donate $44 per razor stroke to the Lower Eastside Girls Club.

For a good cause, of course. Anyway...here she is...
