And now, a Scottish terrier sitting on a toilet
An EV Grieve reader sends along this flyer spotted on Rivington and Ridge on the Lower East Side... As the reader wrote: " I was struck by the simple eloquence of its message…and who doesn’t like a Scottie on a toilet seat?" True!

When the Blob nearly attacked Doughnut Plant — and maybe the entire Lower East Side!
Many thanks to EV Grieve reader Marjorie Ingall for passing along the following shot taken yesterday outside Doughnut Plant on Grand Street...
"Doughnut Plant was too crowded with Mother's Day noshers for me to ask for an explanation, but it smelled awesome," she said...
Fortunately, her kids were on-hand to help subdue this beast with sticks! Because this could have been ugly!

It's a thin line between love and hate
A reader sent along this shot over the weekend...though they didn't say where it was or who shot it... (Still don't know who to give credit to!)
Anyway, BoweryBoogie has a post on this today... As he notes, it's on Rivington between Norfolk and Suffolk Streets. Directly across from Schiller’s.

Silence of the Limbs
This great LES streetscene is from Logically Impossible via Neighborhoodr.
Reminds me of a scene from Stanley Kubrick's "Killer's Kiss."

Beaming up on the Bowery
I snapped a few shots Saturday of the beam action happening at 263 Bowery, just south of Houston. I must have just missed BoweryBoogie, who was there too. BB has more on what's happening here... and the progress thus far on the seven-story mystery project...

Jaws
A few weeks back our pal BoweryBoogie mentioned the Western Union ads on the vacant groundfloor storefront along the Ludlow...
Anyway, this damn thing continues to terrify me...

Former Vasmay Lounge space is now the Local 269
So, when did this pop up...? I swear it wasn't here Friday...The Local 269 was open for business last night at Houston and Suffolk on the LES (the bar's address is 269 Houston)...enticing 2-for-1 happy hour sign on the sidewalk...As enticing as this all was, I didn't have time to stop in and check it out...Another day. Or night.

This looks perfectly safe!
On Stanton Street between Clinton and Suffolk. This promises to be even more of a hazard with the fresh snowfall...

Appreciating fire escapes
Also in the Times today, an appreciation of fire escapes with a shot of one on East Fifth Street.
Although many of the fire escapes built during New York’s second wave of immigration still exist, these well-worn structures have been lamentably overlooked. Even the venerable Encyclopedia of New York City neglects to give them a separate entry. Perhaps it’s time for New Yorkers to give these old cultural symbols a second look.

Don't laugh: This is how Catherine Zeta-Jones met Michael Douglas
Have seen these signs several places around the neighborhood. Spotted this one on Stanton Street near Nolfolk in the LES.

Bird watching
As mentioned in the previous post, we paid a visit to our old neighborhood the other day. (We're acting as if we had moved to Maine...we're just up the street, but we don't come down here that often anymore.) New restuarants/bars and million-dollar condos aside, I was happy to see the fellow with the rooftop pigeon coop was still there.
