[Updated] Starbucks opened today on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place
This location made the end-of-summer deadline by opening today...
The posted hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week... until 10 p.m. on weekends.
This location features a mural by Brooklyn-based artist Misha Tyutyunik, a custom piece that flows across three walls. According to the Starbucks newsroom, this collaboration was made possible via the East Village-based Citizens for the Arts.

As previously reported, this wasn't a case where business was off and Nino's, the previous tenant, had to close. The pizzeria had to close on Oct. 21, 2015, due to a gas leak in the building. On Nov. 17, Nino's received an eviction notice. Owner Nino Camaj had said that the gas was shut off in the building without any notice to him.
In late November 2015, Camaj's lawyers were reportedly in discussion with landlord Citi Urban Management to dispute the rent charged for the month during which they weren't open due to the gas leak. Camaj still had 10 years left on his lease, and had been in court with the landlords.
He accepted a buyout in February 2016, after having been closed for nearly five months. Camaj told DNAinfo that he could no longer afford the $14,500 monthly rent. (Not to mention court expenses.) Camaj said that the rent for the corner space was $3,500 when he first opened in 1989. Starbucks is reportedly paying upwards of $40,000 a month for the space.

Today was apparently a soft opening with an early closing. An EVG reader stopped by early this evening to find it closed until tomorrow.

Plywood arrives for the incoming Starbucks on St. Mark's Place and Avenue A
Workers started putting up the plywood on the corner of St. Mark's Place and Avenue A yesterday.
As we first reported on Monday, the paperwork is on file at the Department of Buildings for a Starbucks in this now-combined corner space that previously housed Nino's and Hop Devil Grill.
No word on a tentative opening date just yet for the Starbucks. There are other questions too, as posed by @EdenBrower, who took the above photo...

Starbucks confirmed for Avenue A
It looks like those Starbucks-to-Avenue A rumors are true.

Per the ALL-CAP DOB paperwork on another work permit for the address: "FILING FOR GENERAL CONSTRUCTION RELATED TO STARBUCKS BUILD-OUT."
It's not exactly clear where the Starbucks will go... there are multiple addresses — 125-131 St Mark's Place and 125-131 Avenue A — associated with the building on the northwest corner, and there are several empty storefronts within these addresses... including the former Nino's and Hop Devil Grill...
The original rumors had the Starbucks going into this prime corner space. (That makes sense.) Paper also just went up in the window of the former Yoshi Sushi...
None of the work permits posted on these storefronts list the Starbucks info. That's only online as of now.
It's also not clear what kind of Starbucks this will be. Last fall, the company announced plans to open up to 1,000 Starbucks stores "with a Reserve coffee bar experience" by the end of 2017. There are four newish locations in NYC of a Starbucks Reserve Roastery, including at 10 Waverly Place.
The architect of record for the Avenue A work was also behind the new Starbucks on Waverly Place as well as several others in the city.
In any event, this will be the first Starbucks to open in the East Village east of First Avenue, where there are locations at Third Street and at 13th Street.

As previously reported, owner Nino Camaj accepted a low six-figure amount to walk away from his remaining 10-year lease and surrender the pizza shop that he opened in 1989. Those Starbucks rumors continue to percolate on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place

Back in the fall, an EVG reader told us a worker was upgrading the electricity at 131 Avenue A ... because he said a Starbucks was going to be renting the former Nino's and Hop Devil Grill spaces on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.
Meanwhile, last week, an Avenue A business owner asked us if we heard about a Starbucks opening on Avenue A. Now the rumor continues to pick up steam, as The Villager cites an unnamed source who tells the weekly paper: "I would say it’s a 90 percent certainty that Starbucks will be in the space."
Last fall, a tipster shared the flyer in circulation for the property...
At the time, a source with knowledge of the asking rent said that the corner space was seeking $15,020 per month and the inline storefront was going for $42,072 per month. The landlord was asking $52,000 for the combined spaces.
So far, there isn't any other evidence that this space has a tenant just yet. And Starbucks has been a handy rumored tenant in recent years ... for the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street and Avenue B and Fourth Street ... the contractor who said that a Starbucks was coming to First Avenue and 13th Street turned out to be correct, though.
James Morrissey, who owns The Late Late on East Houston and now VNYL on Third Avenue, had been after the spaces to create The Honey Fitz, a bar-diner-restaurant-cafe-networking space. Those plans never materialized early last year.

A follow-up to the post yesterday about the combined ex-Nino's and Hop Devil Grill spaces on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.
A tipster shared the flyer in circulation for the property...
As we understand it, the spaces are very much still on the market. No word on the asking rent. All uses and divisions will be considered.
Meanwhile, a reader left this in the comments yesterday:
I live in the building above it. Last week I spoke to a worker fixing electricity in the building who told me they are upgrading the electrical system because a STARBUCKS is going in...
Aside from this claim from a worker, there isn't any other evidence that this space has any retail tenant. The former spaces for Nino's and Hop Devil Grill have been combined
In recent weeks the former Nino's Pizza storefront on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place has been blanketed in graffiti... making it difficult to see what might be going on inside the vacant space. (Not to mention the brown paper.)
The other day a worker wiped away part of the tags, offering a view of the interior...

The wall separating the former Hop Devil Grill at 129 St. Mark's Place has been removed, creating one big(ger) space...
There are work permits, dated Oct. 14, on file with the DOB for "interior demo."
No word if there's a tenant for the space or if the landlord is just giving it the vanilla box treatment to show potential tenants.

Those plans were put on hold, though Morrissey told DNAinfo back in February the he "remains interested in the location, assuming all outstanding lease issues have been resolved."

Activity at Nino's, and brown-paper action
Late last week workers placed paper over the windows at the former Nino's, the pizzeria that closed in the fall of 2015 on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.

No word on what might be coming here. There aren't any work permits on file that match up to a storefront renovation.

Mystery kegs at Nino's
Nino's has been closed since last October on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place.
A few people explored taking over the space... but the former pizzeria remains on the rental market.
And over the weekend these [presumably empty] kegs arrived inside the storefront.
Curious who they belong too, given that there any adjacent businesses that are even open... and Nino's didn't serve beer.

The former Nino's is for rent on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place
The for rent signs arrived Friday at the former pizzeria here on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place...
The listing isn't live just yet at the Jonis Realty site.
Perhaps then this means that the proposed cocktail bar-restaurant-grab-and-go-breakfast-place-co-working-freelance space The Honey Fitz is no longer in the works.
As you may recall, the proprietors, James Morrissey (The Late Late on East Houston) and Gerard McNamee (GM of Webster Hall), wanted to combine the empty Hop Devil Grill with Nino's for one large Honey Fitz. However, facing opposition from CB3 during the February SLA committee meeting, the proprietors withdrew their proposal. (BoweryBoogie covered the meeting here.)
The former Hop Devil space remains open... literally...
Maybe the Honey Fitz can work from just this space.

But before the February CB3-SLA meeting, word came out that Camaj had accepted a low six-figure amount to walk away from his lease and surrender the space. The kitchen equipment was auctioned off on Feb. 22.
Nino's opened in 1989. (Nino sold the business in 2012, which produced a short-lived pizzeria. He returned and reopened Nino's in July 2013.)
Camaj told DNAinfo in February that he could no longer afford the $14,500 monthly rent. Camaj said that the rent for the corner space was $3,500 when he first opened.

The auction is going on this afternoon at Nino's...various workers are carrying out the remains of the pizzeria, which is now closed for good on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place.

Report: Higher rent helped doom Nino's; owner wants to open another pizzeria in the East Village

On Wednesday, the signs on the door at Nino's stating that the pizzeria would reopen were removed... along with the help wanted signs...
As reported on Tuesday, owner Nino Camaj accepted a low six-figure amount to walk away from his remaining 10-year lease and surrender his longtime space on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.
Nino's had to close on Oct. 21 due to a gas leak in the building. On Nov. 17, the pizzeria was hit with an eviction notice. Camaj has said that the gas was shut off in the building without any notice to him.
In late November, Camaj's lawyers were reportedly in discussion with landlord Citi Urban Management to dispute the rent charged for the month during which they had to close due to the gas leak. However, a Citi Urban representative at the time told Bedford + Bowery that Nino owed rent for previous months — not just for the month without gas.
DNAinfo spoke briefly with Camaj, who said that he could no longer afford the $14,500 monthly rent. "I’m not making any money before I closed," he told DNAinfo in a story published yesterday. "I’m breaking even."
Camaj said that the rent for the corner space was $3,500 when he opened in 1989. (Nino sold the business in 2012, which produced a short-lived pizzeria. He returned and reopened Nino's in July 2013.)
Camaj told DNAinfo that he would like to continue running a pizzeria in the East Village — if he can find a more affordable location.
Meanwhile, James Morrissey, who owns The Late Late on East Houston, had been after the Nino's space to combine with the former Hop Devil Grill next door to create The Honey Fitz, a destination serving a grab-and-go breakfast in the morning along with high-end cocktails by night... with WiFi and printers for freelancers and others to use during the day.
However, facing a denial for a liquor license from CB3's SLA committee on Tuesday night, The Honey Fitz team withdrew their proposal for the time being.
Morrissey said Wednesday that he "remains interested in the location, assuming all outstanding lease issues have been resolved," per DNAinfo.

As for The Honey Fitz. BoweryBoogie was at the meeting, and reports that in the face of a CB3 committee denial, The Honey Fitz team withdrew their proposal for another month.

District Manager Susan Stetzer made sure the room understood her position that removing Nino’s for a business locals unanimously reject is unacceptable. The decades-old pizzeria has been shuttered for months because landlord Citi-Urban Management shut gas to the whole building (i.e. purported leak), and even residents are without the utility.

The panel quickly filed behind Stetzer on this one, and was collectively incensed that Nino’s Pizza was not only being forced out, but that these operators were content to side with a landlord who acts in such wanton manner. Seeing the imminent denial at hand, the applicant team employed the strategy of withdrawing. Keeping the board and the opposition on ice for another month to reassess “given the situation with Nino.”

The Honey Fitz in the works for St. Mark's Place and Avenue A
There are ambitious plans in the works to convert and combine the former Hop Devil Grill space on St. Mark's Place with the temporarily closed Nino's Pizza next door on Avenue A, according to public documents (PDF) on the CB3 website.
A team led by James Morrissey (The Late Late on East Houston) and Gerard McNamee (Webster Hall) are proposing an operation called The Honey Fitz that would offer quick-serve breakfast as well as lunch and dinner ... in addition to a bar with "upscale craft cocktails." During the week, The Honey Fitz would offer free Wi-Fi and printers for "all local creative entrepreneurs."

According to the paperwork filed ahead of this month's CB3-SLA meeting on Feb. 16, The Honey Fitz is named for the yacht owned by the Kennedys.
The configuration shows two bars in the conjoined spaces ... with seating for up to 90 people. The proposal includes a plan for a sidewalk cafe with 5-7 tables for two along St. Mark's Place.

As mentioned, the plan calls for the conversion of longtime tenant Nino's pizzeria, which has been anchoring the corner of Avenue A and St. Mark's Place.

This block of Avenue A is awfully quiet, and why is Lucy's closed?
Not much happening on Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street... as far as storefronts are concerned..
Nino's and Yoshi Sushi are entering the third month of closure, apparently due to a gas leak in the building. (And the landlord previously issued eviction notices.)
The space between these two restaurants remains vacant. The 10 Degrees Bistro closed back in August. (The team behind Shoolbred's and Ninth Ward got the OK last month from CB3 for a beer-wine license to open a cajun-style restaurant here.)
Continuing north... EVG regular Peter Brownscombe shared these photos from last Wednesday night... Lucy's has been closed...
... and the note on the door isn't the most comforting — closed until further notice.
Lucy tends to take several breaks during the year, though she always leaves a sign with a reopening date. She has randomly closed for a short period of time without any explanation (here and here). Anyway, not sure what is happening here.
And the rest of the block... Top A Nails is open... the former Sustainable NYC is for rent... and Doc Holliday's anchors the corner at Ninth Street... for now there are just two of seven businesses open on the block...

Encouraging signs at Nino's

Nino's on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place had to close on Oct. 21 due to a gas leak in the building, according to a sign on the door. (There was a similar sign a storefront away at Yoshi Sushi, 131 Avenue A.)
On Nov. 17, the pizzeria was hit with an eviction notice.
Nino Camaj, the owner of Nino's, told Bedford & Bowery last week that the gas was shut off in the building without any notice to him or the residents.
"Now they want us to pay rent for the month we have been closed, and I’m not paying that, that’s their problem." Camaj’s lawyers are currently in conversation with the lawyers of the landlord, Citi Urban Management, to dispute the rent charged for the month during which Nino’s was forced to remain closed.
Meanwhile, this past weekend, Nino's posted help wanted signs...
... perhaps a good sign that the business will be up and running soon enough.

Back on Oct. 21, signs arrived on the front door of Nino's on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place noting a closure due to a gas leak in a building next door. A similar sign arrived a storefront away at Yoshi Sushi, 131 Avenue A.
Now, the landlord of both businesses have served eviction notices.
Nino's has five days within service of this notice to respond… the legal documents taped to the door states that the October rent is due (with interest) for the sum of $22,549.93…
The situation appears more dire at Yoshi Sushi …
… where the legal documents state that the owners need to pay more than $42,000 in rent and penalties dating back to September…

An EVG reader notes that at Nino's, someone has removed the eviction notice that arrived this morning… and there's a new sign noting that Nino's will reopen…

Gas leak closes Nino's for now
Several readers noted that the pizzeria on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place closed yesterday... the sign on the door points to a gas leak in a neighboring building as the cause.
As we understand it, Nino decided to close not to take any chances... they are hopeful that they will be able to reopen tomorrow, Saturday at the latest…
