And now, a reader politely takes exception with the United States Postal Service

[File photo by Gian G. via Yelp]

From the EVG reader mailbag via mdmn:

So the nightmare of the USPS continues. Not only are they still not attempting to deliver packages... I was home all Sunday, so bullshit a 5:09 pm attempt, and bullshit a notice was left... but now I'm told to pick it up at the branch that services 10009...

Where the fuck is that?

Is it the East 3rd Street location? The new East 14th Street location? The Madison Avenue Location? Or perhaps according to the USPS website, the still operating Peter Stuyvesant location that IS FUCKING CLOSED!!!

Fuck you USPS...

Which opens today! But it wasn't open on our way to Day Job! Boo!

But! Workers took down the rest of the paper that was covering the doors... and we could see more of the interior... and it looks like there are service windows!

Right back here or there ... we saw at least three arrows service windows...

Please let us know if you go by today... Give us a report! on this most eagerly anticipated USPS retail outlet opening ever. (And how much longer will the Duane Reade sign remain up? That will be good for at least 10 more EVG posts!)

Exclusive 2nd look inside the all-new USPS retail outlet on East 14th Street

The mostly eagerly anticipated USPS retail outlet opening ever The new USPS retail outlet opens tomorrow at 333 E. 14th St. at the former Duane Reade (and Gristedes) location. We don't know exactly what services will be offered here, aside from self-service stamp sales and P.O. boxes. (We'd have better luck getting info from the Kremlin.)

This location will serve, in part, as a replacement to the now-closed Peter Stuyvesant Post Office branch at 432 E. 14th St.

Anyway! Walked by the place this morning… The iconic Duane Reade has-moved-around-the-corner sign is still up. But workers removed the paper that covered the windows…

.. and here is a shot from last night via EVG regular Pinch, who first alerted us to the photo opp…

Guess we'll find out tomorrow what other services the retail outlet will offer… such as large package pickup.

The Peter Stuyvesant Post Office branch is going… going…

The Peter Stuyvesant Post Office winded down its stay at 432 E. 14th St. yesterday… today the branch is just open until 1 for people with P.O. Boxes… as we first reported yesterday, this location of the U.S.P.S has closed for good… with retail services taking place down the block at 333 E. 14th St. starting Monday.

One thing is for sure: No one really knows what's going on here

Here's the scene yesterday around 5 (four hours after they ended business for the day) … where some customers had no idea that the branch was closing so soon…

And we still don't have any better idea if large parcel services will operate out of the F.D.R. Station at East 54th Street and Third Avenue.

Aside from the Cooper Station on Fourth Avenue … another option is the Tompkins Square Station on East Third Street between Avenue B and Avenue C…

Here is that location's info … via the U.S.P.S. website…

Dumpsters are ready for the remains of the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office

As we first reported earlier, the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office on East 14th Street closes for good at 1 p.m. today. (The branch here near Avenue A will be open tomorrow JUST for P.O. Box customers make arrangements for the new P.O. outlet at 333 E. 14th St.)

Meanwhile, @nyev_eliza noted the arrival this morning of dumpsters outside the East 13th Street loading docks... perhaps we'll finally find that "lost" box from xmas 1994 in the dumpster.

The Peter Stuyvesant Post Office closes for good TODAY

After nearly a year of speculation, the day is upon us (without much notice): The Peter Stuyvesant Post Office closes for good today at 1 p.m.

EVG reader EVJenn shared this sign hanging in the lobby from yesterday … where there was "hysteria abounding"…

The branch here on East 14th Street near Avenue A will be open tomorrow JUST for P.O. Box customers… and the new location will be open Monday at 333 E. 14th St., the former Duane Reade that the USPS is leasing JUST for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes. (EVG regular Ken from Ken's Kitchen has pointed out that large parcel services will operate out of the F.D.R. Station at East 54th Street and Third Avenue. Convenient!)

Initially, word was that the USPS was unable to come to terms on a new lease with the building's owner. However, a rep for the owner, Benenson Capital Partners, told the Town & Village blog and the Save the Post Office blog that it was actually the USPS's decision to leave because of a desire to downsize.

Last fall, the Stuyvesant Stationery shop next door to the post office at 432 E. 14th St. lost its lease and closed. So they'll be some space here for some kind of new development.

A look at your new post office on East 14th Street

By now you know that the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office will be closing soon (enough) on East 14th Street near Avenue A… and the USPS is leasing the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue just for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.

There was a hole in the paper on the inside of the former Duane Reade… we took a look inside the other afternoon…

Not real exciting, but… No official word just yet when this location will open for business.

Reader mailbag: What has happened to the Cooper Station Post Office?

We usually hear gripes about the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office on East 14th Street. That branch, as you likely know, is closing in the coming weeks. ( The USPS will lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.)

Meanwhile, the Cooper Station branch on Fourth Avenue at East 11th Street was the PO Oasis, a magical place where you didn't have to wait in line for 90 minutes … and where you could find employees who smiled — and not just when they were going on break while you were standing in line.

Now, ahead of the Peter Stuyvesant closure, an EVG reader wonders if that branch's "inept and lazy management" has been transferred to Cooper Station.

The reader explains.

This post office used to be quite good (considering), but since November the lines have gotten longer and longer and slower, the self-service machines mostly don't work, the place looks dirtier and more run-down than it used to (although all the lights are left on on both floors 24 hours a day when it is closed).

The latest trick (which is what I heard was standard operating procedure for Peter Stuyvesant) is failing to deliver packages and lying about it. I ordered from Amazon and the USPS claims they tried to deliver at 6:04 p.m. on Sunday — never mind they don't work on Sundays and the lobby of my building is open and attended 24/7. They didn't leave a slip so now I can't go to pick up the package. I rescheduled the delivery online for yesterday and nothing happened either. [Updated: The USPS is delivering for Amazon on Sundays now.]

It's a shame because the Cooper Square location used to be the place people went to avoid the East 14th Street debacle — not any more.

PO paradise lost? Anyone else notice a change (for the worse) in service at Cooper Station?

Pro Land reopens on East 14th Street

The Pro Land sneaker shop on East 14th Street near Avenue A abruptly closed the other day. There was a notice of a sale, but no word of a renovation. The space looked gutted.

Given the rumors (just rumors) that the single-level structures from the post office to the southwest corner of Avenue A will be cleared out to make way for some Double D development, it seemed plausible that Pro Land was a goner.

Per an EVG commenter Monday:

The Pro Land sneaker shop at 14th and A is suddenly closed. Walked by this morning and the place was gutted, men in there working.

Between the billboard coming down on the SW corner of A/14th (exposing the greatly missed Chico 9/11 mural), Stuyvesant Stationery (a few doors down from Pro Land) closing last fall, and of course the closing of the Stuyvesant PO next month, I would't be surprised if everything from Ave A to the detestable A Building gets razed on that side of 14th.

For now, at least, this isn't the case. As these photos yesterday by Bobby Williams show, the space has been quickly renovated and restocked...

The store was to reopen last night.

Anyway, to recap, the beloved Peter Stuyvesant Post Office branch on East 14th Street is closing soon. (The USPS will lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.)

The lease expires at the current location at the end of next month. The landlord reportedly told the USPS that they have other plans (residential?) for the building.

Last fall, the Stuyvesant Stationery shop next door to the post office lost its lease and closed.

Peter Stuyvesant Post Office now also open to ruin your Sundays this month

The Sunday hours continue this month at the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office on East 14th Street. (And apparently not everyone could agree on the hours, as you can see that 2 p.m. got changed to 1 p.m.)

Regardless! We all know how much fun it is going here. (A reminder here and here.)

And people, as people do, have taken to Yelp to offer their opinions on this branch … the overall average rating: 1 star!

Here's one recent 1-star review:

This place is hell on earth. I'm writing this review whilst standing in line- it's now been over an hour waiting to pick up an express international courier package I never received a notice for (with everyone else that's been screwed over by usps in this area)

I feel like it's a Survivor TV show challenge- survival of the postal service fittest. I'm watching people concede the line after waiting TOO long, hungry babies crying, there are the elderly sitting on the floor due to body aches, there are loud fits and nervous breakdowns from customers at the service box when rude staff aren't helpful after they've been waiting a half life for a stamp.

2 hours later, I need to pee. And I'm still waiting.

In any event, this is likely the last holiday season here … as this branch is supposedly closing in the spring. The USPS will lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.

The Stuyvesant Stationery shop closes Monday after 23 years in business

As noted here a few weeks ago, the Stuyvesant Stationery shop on East 14th Street near Avenue A lost its lease... and they close for good after Monday (probably a good time to stock up on inexpensive wrapping paper, among other sidewalk-sale items) ... the store has been here for 23 years...

First sign of more development on East 14th Street?

As you know, many storefronts along East 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B have been cleared out ahead of some new development that will eat up a good portion of the block. (Read about this here.)

Now it appears that it's time to starting clearing out storefronts just to the west... between Avenue A and the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office, whose lease expires in February.

The USPS will lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.

Back in April, we noted this about the single-level businesses lined up next to the post office: "This is all drool-worthy space for some developer."

And just like that, an EVG Facebook tipster notes that the Stuyvesant Stationery shop next door has lost its lease and is closing...

For now, there are only the usual rumors about what's next here (NYU dorms are always a popular guess) ... and how will the other businesses along here fare in the coming months? Will the rest of the block to Avenue A go away to make way for a new development?

Report: Closure of the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office is pretty much a done deal

Catching up with this report by Sabina Mollot on the Town & Village Blog ... she reported on Friday that "the union representing regional postal employees learned that the United States Postal Service had decided to proceed with a plan to relocate the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office on East 14th Street."

The USPS would lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.

However, a USPS rep told Mollot that the decision is not final.

The lease expires at the current location next February. The landlord reportedly told the USPS that they have other plans for the building, which was erected in 1951.

Soon, you might be able to do your post office business at a former Duane Reade

We're due for an update on the the proposed relocation of the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office on East 14th Street... there was a town hall meeting on the subject last Monday... Jefferson Siegel has a nice recap of the contentious meeting in the current issue of The Villager.

There's a lot to cover.

Briefly.

1) People are generally pissed off by this possible closure.

2) The plan would work something like this: The carriers who sort and deliver mail to homes and businesses in the area would be shipped off to the Madison Square Station on East 23rd Street near Third Avenue while large parcel services would operate out of the F.D.R. Station at 54th Street and Third Avenue. (Handy!)

The USPS would lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes. (At least the space wouldn't become another bank branch, as rumored.)

3) Residents have until next Tuesday (May 7) to submit their comments to USPS. From the article:

Comments, which must include the name Peter Stuyvesant Post Office, can be sent to: Joseph J. Mulvey, Facilities Implementation, U.S. Postal Service, 2 Congress St., Room 8, Milford, MA 01757-9998.

(Be sure to use the correct postage.)

Despite being pressed on the topic, the USPS rep at the meeting wouldn't divulge the building's landlord. The landlord reportedly told the USPS that he/she has other plans for the building, which was erected in 1951.

Right the whole Villager article here.

"The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is proposing the relocation of the Peter Stuyvesant Station Post Office...to a yet to-be-determined location with the same zip code area.

The reason behind this proposal is the upcoming expiration of the lease on the present location. The lease will expire in February 2014, and we have been unable to reach agreement with the landlord on a new lease."

Jeez, the USPS can't even afford it here...

UPDATED: Did you hear the rumor about the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office branch closing?

So have you heard the rumors that the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office on East 14th Street near Avenue A will close this fall? We have. Again, it's just a rumor.

After all, in July 2011, when USPS officials released a list of thousands of post offices being studied for possible closure to save money, this one wasn't on the list. Maybe all this is just wishful thinking by the patrons who have expressed their exasperation-disgust, etc. at this branch. (See comments in the links below.)

Or maybe a developer is starting this rumor. Why, what a prime chunk of East Village real estate! Think of the condos we could have instead of some dumb mail!

Or maybe it's just an unhappy postal worker, like the letter carrier who has been telling residents on his or her route that this branch is closing in September, and most likely absorbed into the PO branch on East 23rd Street between Third Avenue and Lexington.

Updated 8:56 a.m.:

OK! Well, apparently this is more than a rumor... more like a done deal.
