After a 7-week closure, Salumeria Rosi is back on Avenue B

Salumeria Rosi is back in service at 222 Avenue B between 13th Street and 14th Street after a seven-week closure for storm-related repairs. 

The cafe reopened earlier last week, and the restaurant reopened on Friday. Along with repairing the ceiling and floors, owner Andrew Loscalzo added a coffee window and hardwood flooring. Brunch, a new seasonal menu and outdoor seating are also in the works. 

We spoke with Loscalzo, who opened the EV restaurant this past January, for an update.

When we last spoke, you had just temporarily closed the restaurant. What happened? 

A big storm in July damaged the ceiling, so we had to replace it. We also had some water damage to the floor and repaired that. It took us about seven weeks to get it all done. We wanted to make sure we were at 100%. 

Were the landlord and building management helpful with the repairs? 

They were ... cooperative. 

You mentioned some additions to the space. What can patrons expect? 

We opened our coffee window, which is exciting. We also installed real hardwood floors, and we’re launching a new seasonal menu at the end of September. 

What's changing on the menu? Are you keeping items from the previous one? 

I would say pretty much all of our fan favorites will stay on the menu. They never really come off. The reality is that some items are seasonal. As an Italian restaurant, we must stay seasonal. Whether it's asparagus season, cauliflower, or watermelon, we try to stick with what's fresh.

You're also installing seating around the tree bed. What's the plan there? 

We’ll be open for brunch, and we have our outdoor dining cafe. We want to clean up and beautify the block a little. The seating is removable, but we put it there so people having coffee have a place to sit and gather.

Salumeria Rosi sets reopening dates on Avenue B

Salumeria Rosi will reopen its cafe on Tuesday, Sept. 8, followed by the restaurant on Friday, Sept. 11.

The Northern Italian restaurant at 222 Avenue B between 13th and 14th Streets has been closed since early July following severe weather and flooding. 

As previously reported, owner Andrew Loscalzo said the building sustained damage that required structural repairs.

Later this month, Salumeria Rosi, which debuted in January, plans to remain open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with music and a late-night menu.

Salumeria Rosi eyes Labor Day reopening following building-related damage

Salumeria Rosi, the Italian restaurant and salumi shop at 222 Avenue B between 13th and 14th Streets, is eyeing a Labor Day return after a recent temporary closure.

Owner Andrew Loscalzo told EVG last night the closure stems from damage to the building, including issues related to a storm drain and structural repairs.

"We had some damage from the building and we're fixing it," he said. "In fact, we're doing some nice updates to the space."

Loscalzo said the restaurant is targeting a reopening around Labor Day.

"We're not going anywhere," he said. "Everything's great with the business."

He added that Salumeria Rosi is working with the building's ownership and its insurance carrier to complete the repairs.

"We just want to be open," Loscalzo said. "We didn't want to close."

He also expressed gratitude for the neighborhood's response since the restaurant opened here in January. 

"We've had such a good reception," he said. "We're really just so happy with how the project has been going so far with everybody in the neighborhood coming in for their coffee or lunch or dinner. I want people to remember us, and I want people to be excited for when we reopen."

This is the second Salumeria Rosi outpost, joining the one that opened on the UWS in 2008.

Openings: Salumeria Rosi on Avenue B

Salumeria Rosi finally made its East Village debut last Wednesday at 222 Avenue B between East 13th and 14th streets.

This is the second NYC location for the northern Italian restaurant and salumeria, which first opened on the Upper West Side in 2008. 

The new location closely follows the Uptown model, offering housemade pastas, salumi and imported cheeses, antipasti, and a concise Italian wine list, while adding a neighborhood café that opens earlier in the day. 

The café begins service at 8 a.m. daily, with coffee from Italian roaster Hausbrandt and a selection of breakfast pastries, including cornetti, sfogliatelle and maritozzi, as well as tarts and croissant sandwiches.

At 11:30 a.m., the dining room opens for lunch, serving panini alongside the full menu. Beginning at 5 p.m., the space transitions to dinner and bar service. (Find the menus here.)

The menu centers on northern Italian dishes, including seasonal antipasti, fritti, fresh pastas, etc. Standbys from the Upper West Side location carry over, along with nightly pasta specials and a few East Village-specific additions. 

Owner Andrew Loscalzo (below) designed the space himself, drawing inspiration from Milanese style and traditional salumerias.

The previous tenant here, The Roost, a coffee bar by day and speakeasy-esque cocktail lounge by night, closed in the spring of 2024. We first heard about Salumeria Rosi's plans around that same time.

Salumeria Rosi is an Italian restaurant, salumi and delicatessen shop, which debuted on the Upper West Side in 2008. 

The EV location includes a bar and cafe.

A restaurant rep told us that the owners are very excited to be in the East Village. We'll have more info about an opening date soon.
