Basics Plus is closing on 3rd Avenue

Housewares shop Basics Plus is closing at 91 Third Ave. and 12th Street. A store employee told EVG correspondent Steven that March April 29 is the last day.

The going-out-of-business signs in the front windows direct future Basics Plus shoppers to the location on University at 13th Street. (Also, everything in the store is 20 percent off, per the signage.)

Not sure at the moment why his outpost, which opened here in August 2014, is shutting down. It seems like a good location given the proximity to several dorms (NYU, New School and Cooper Union) as well as multiple apartment buildings. Rising rents? Amazon? Too many Basics Plus outposts?

In any event, I reached out the the Basics Plus HQ to learn more about this closure.

Basics Plus, with multiple NYC locations, took over the space last held by Surprise! Surprise!, which shuttered after 25 years in business in April 2014.

Basics Plus is now open on 3rd Avenue

The windows at Basics Plus at 91 Third Avenue are filled with oven mitts, household cleaners and power drills!

The housewares store with several NYC locations opened Friday here on the northeast corner of 12th Street. They took over the space last held by Surprise! Surprise!, which closed after 25 years in business on April 27.

Last month we heard that a Basics Plus was going to take over the former Surprise! Surprise! storefront on Third Avenue and East 12th Street.

The coming soon sign has arrived …



No word on an opening date for the housewares store. There looks to be a lot of renovation work left on the interior.

We looked inside the former Surprise! Surprise! space the other day… and workers have gutted the former housewares store at 91 Third Ave. at East 12th Street.

As noted a few weeks ago, a Basics Plus is rumored to be taking the space.

Not much has happened at the former Surprise! Surprise! space since the housewares store closed after 25 years in business on April 27.

Where are the "for lease" signs?

Well, perhaps there's already a new tenant lined up. An EVG reader passes along the following tip … a worker at the empty storefront on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and East 12th Street said that a Basics Plus will be moving in soon.

So, more housewares and and hardware-type items — much like what Surprise! Surprise! sold.

There is a Basics Plus just up the Avenue between East 17th Street and East 18th Street… no word if they are relocating or opening another location (there are three total now in the City).

The end is nearly here for Surprise! Surprise! The housewares store that has anchored the northeast corner of Third Avenue and East 12th Street for more than 25 years has been rent hiked out of here, as we first reported in February.

The store closes after Sunday...



Everything is 50 percent off... with the promise of deeper discounts this weekend...

Surprise! Surprise! closes after April 27

As we first reported back in February, Surprise! Surprise!, the housewares store that has anchored the northeast corner of Third Avenue and East 12th Street for more than 25 years, is closing at the end this month.

According to employees, the store's last day is April 27. Everything is now 50 percent off… so go buy a few new shower curtains.

And the reason behind the closure: The rents have gotten too high.
