Sunday's opening shot
EVG reader John M. discovered a visitor on his fire escape the other morning... per Goggla, this is a juvenile Cooper's hawk ... and for John M. a nice start to the day...

Morning visitors
EVG reader Sara shares these photos from this morning along Ninth Street...when a juvenile Cooper's hawk stopped by bearing a bloody hunk of something in its talons...
Meanwhile, Paul W. had a Cooper's sighting from Seventh Street...
Thanks to Goggla for helping ID the hawk(s) ... at least one Cooper's hawk was recently trying to start some shit with Christo and Amelia, the resident red-tailed hawks of Tompkins Square Park.
As Goggla recently noted:
Cooper's hawks are also in the area. I've counted at least one adult and two immature Cooper's hawks around the park, but there could be more. In the past, the red-tails have mostly tolerated the Cooper's hawks, but as nesting season approaches, Christo and Amelia are getting more aggressive about chasing them out of the area.

From the woodlands to Tompkins Square Park
Cooper's Hawks are a fairly common site this time of year in Tompkins Square Park, per the bird-watching regulars... Steven shared this photo from yesterday.
The Cooper's Hawks don't always get along so well with Christo and Dora, the Park's resident read-tailed hawks. This visit was drama-free, though.

Here are two photos from this morning. Still no drama.

Wednesday's parting shot
One of the Cooper's Hawks that have been hanging around Tompkins Square Park of late... don't think that Christo and Dora, the red-tailed hawks, are big fans... photo by Steven.

Rooftop ruckus
This was this scene yesterday atop a building on East 10th Street… One of the hawks (Christo? Goggla? Help!)
The hawk's presence didn't go over so well with the other birds on this perch.
The birds continued to make a ruckus…
… and were eventually successful in driving away the unwanted squatter…

OMG baby hawks! (UPDATED WITH VIDEO!)
Here are a few of the latest incredible photos that Francois Portmann has posted from the nest cam up on the Christodora House … where Christo and Dora's chicks hatched this past week.
The red-tailed hawk parents have also assembled quite a feast for the family — there are at least four dead rats stored in the nest. (Shouldn't that be refrigerated?)

Thank you to Goggla, who has been chronicling the activity here from Day 1. Head over there to find out where exactly the hawks have been discarding the rat carcasses ... as well as other habits of the new parents.
And find more hawk photos at Francois's photography site here.
Also, check out these hawk photos and video from the Christodora at the Urban Hawks website.

P.S.
The baby hawks are becoming quite an attraction... here's a fellow Christodora House resident checking out the action...

Today's hawk; slightly stunned, but makes a recovery
Well, several people noted that this hawk had, earlier in the day, flown into the bus shelter on Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street… it looked pretty bad for a moment. The bird was lying on the sidewalk, apparently stunned, according to onlookers. But! The hawk recovered … and was spotted "eating a small rodent whole" in Tompkins Square Park a little later.
