'Kids' today: 20th anniversary T-shirt and skateboards

"Kids" turns 20 this July ... and ahead of the reunion festivities next month at BAM ... Supreme has released a special edition series of skateboard decks and shirts for the film that introduced us to Chloë Sevigny and Rosario Dawson...

Dangerous Minds today published the news release from Supreme about the items:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Larry Clark’s debut film, KIDS, the portrayal of NYC youth’s escapades in the early 90’s. Some were offended by the raw and anarchic world Larry Clark documented, for those that weren’t, the film became an important document of the time, place and culture.

Through photographing skaters in NYC, Larry Clark came to meet the film’s writer, Harmony Korine and star, Leo Fitzpatrick. The rest of the cast was pieced together with a variety of downtown New York characters including original Supreme team riders Justin Pierce and Harold Hunter. It is a testament to KIDS cultural impact that it resonates today just as much as it did in 1995.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary, Supreme is proud to release a collection of items featuring stills from the iconic film KIDS. The Collection will consist of a Hooded Sweatshirt, Long Sleeved T-Shirt, two graphic T-Shirts, and three Skateboards.

Here we have a piece of paper recovered from the recesses of the backpack of a student at The Neighborhood School (PS 363) on First Avenue and Third Street.

She translates the sign for us: Starbucks: The Bean Instead.

We understand that two first-grade classmates were drawing these and handing them out to the other kids. Fight the power.

SHOCKERS: Local college students prefer drugs to sex (at least in 1967)

The Washington Square Journal from Nov. 30, 1967, includes a SHOCKING expose about the habits of local college students... You can click on the piece to read it a little better.... The article reports on the findings of Dr. Sylvia Hertz, a psychologist-sociologist, who polled students on college campuses in the metropolitan area and discovered that "campus drugs have outglamourized and outchallenged sex on today’s college campus since sex is easily attainable, available and taken for granted, and has lost its yesterday spirit of adventure and conquest."

I swear that I saw this woman in the same position outside the Village Pourhouse the other evening, though she was wearing University of Florida sweats.

"Kids" these days

I was reminded that "Kids" was released in 15-or-so-odd markets on July 28, 1995. It opened in NYC on July 21. And we all knew people so excited about this. Parts of the movie were filmed around here, of course. And the reviews! ("A wake-up call to the world!") I was dragged along to the Angelika. (According to the Times back on July 26, 1995: " 'Kids' broke the house records for weekend box office grosses at both theaters where it played, the Angelika Film Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas.")

I recall feeling underwhelmed by the film, though between the hype and the backlash it was difficult to keep an open mind. Anyway, I watched "Kids" again last weekend for the first time in 14 years...and turned it off after 20 minutes. I'll pick it again some other day.
