Thursday's parting shot

Reps from PETA gathered in Tompkins Square Park today, urging the public to respect the area's pigeons.
The appeal comes in the wake of an arrest last week tied to alleged pigeon poaching (for target practice) on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place.

Pigeon-proofing the Con Ed substation on Avenue A and 5th Street

You may have noticed the activity around the Fifth Street side of the Con Ed substation, a popular roosting spot for pigeons along Avenue A.
For the past 10 days or so, workers have coned off about a quarter of the block here between Avenue A and Avenue B to navigate the two cranes on the scene.
According to one of the workers, the crew is erecting an enclosure to prevent pigeon droppings from befouling the equipment below ...

Not sure exactly what this structure will look like... for now, the workers are still putting in steel supports...

The graffiti scrub team was out early this morning power-washing the building... someone had tagged DBDBDBDBDBDBDB from Sixth Street all the way across Avenue A...

Carb loading: This morning in meals for the pigeons in Tompkins Square Park

Someone today decided to toss a bag of cooked pasted (with lemons) into Tompkins Square Park along Avenue A this morning. For the pigeons, though they don't seem too terribly interested at the moment.
Thanks to Vinny & O for the photo.

There are pigeons trapped inside the former P.S. 64 on 9th Street
Someone put the above sign on the Ninth Street side of the former P.S 64 and CHARAS/El Bohio community center this past weekend.
The sign notes that there are pigeons now trapped inside the building after the windows were recently boarded up on the top floor.
They are smashing up against the windows to get free. Heard 3 broken windows in one hour. Injured birds may be found on the ground hurt by the broken glass.
There's a number for the Wild Bird Fund on the Upper West Side.
As previously reported, developer Gregg Singer, who bought the property between Avenue B and Avenue C from the city in 1998, continues to push having the building converted into student housing.
Thanks to David Reyer for the photo!
