The sinkhole that made its debut on First Avenue at East Seventh Street last week at this time is receiving some TLC from workers in a fairly large operation...



No word just yet when the sinkhole will return.

Promising sinkhole continues to be promising on East 7th Street

We'll continue to monitor this one on East Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

You'll notice the skid marks ...



We're currently analyzing the brake marks to see what the vehicle's speed was prior to being swallowed up by the sinkhole. Also, someone left behind their sinkhole measuring apparatus.

The overnight work on the East Houston Street sinkhole

Crews worked around the clock to repair the sinkhole that formed after a ruptured pipe flooded East Houston Street with mucky water yesterday morning.

EVG reader Connor Sheets took these photos between 1:30-2 a.m. …





East Houston Street was closed between Allen and Essex after the 20-inch water main dating to 1959 broke.

"When that type of water starts rushing out of a pipe, it's gonna take everything with it," Jim Roberts, the city Department of Environmental Protection's deputy commissioner of water and sewer operations, told the Daily News.

This stretch of East Houston has seemingly been under construction since 1959 … however the DEP claims that the break is an anomaly, according to NBC News.

The DEP said they shut off the water to five adjacent businesses and eight residential buildings. Katz's, who sustained heavy losses after its basement flooded, was able to remain open for business during all this — the deli is connected to an adjacent main. Unfortunately, its neighbor, the Lobster Joint, didn't fare so well.

"We're out of business," general manager Alex Linomontes told The Wall Street Journal. "We still have bills to pay, and there are hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage."

In the basement, workers in industrial rubber boots waded through stagnant brown water, salvaging what they could. Mr. Linomontes said he lost refrigerators, boilers, and other equipment to flooding — along with tens of thousands of dollars worth of seafood.

East Houston was expected to be open to motorists later this morning.

East 10th Street (mini) sinkhole no longer sinking, probably

Late yesterday afternoon, a local website breathlessly reported on a "sinkhole" opening up on East 10th Street right by the Tompkins Square Library branch…

While we weren't able to swing by for a factual update today (to be honest, it wasn't happy hour) … an EVG reader passed along these photos showing what has happened here between Avenue A and Avenue B …

So all is well… though you may not want to walk on the plate on the street with flip-flops or anything else that easily melts…

[Updated] Sinkhole opens up on East 10th Street

Around 4:45, some passersby flagged down an NYPD cruiser … seems as if a sinkhole just opened right up … much to the excitement of some of the teens standing nearby…



Not likely coincidentally … this is almost the exact spot between Avenue A and Avenue B where Con Ed was called in on Wednesday morning…

Sinkhole threatens to swallow Avenue A, or at least this trash can

Uh-oh! Run! Or walk briskly! Dave on 7th reports that a sinkhole is growing (or getting deeper) here on Avenue A between East Third Street and East Second Street ...



Meanwhile, developers have until 5 today to submit their bids for the sinkhole.

Yesterday, courtesy of RyanAvenueA, we learned about a sinkhole and an Icicle Audi on Second Street...

Gothamist has more on the story ... As they note, the car has come to symbolize the Great Arctic Blast of Jan. 24, 2011©. Gothamist spotted three news vans parked on that block this morning.

Meanwhile, CBS 2 tracks down the car's owner, who has the right attitude about material possessions: “It could be worse like if that was me or a family member covered in ice that wouldn’t be good; so it’s all relative.” (A leaky pipe under the street caused this, per CBS 2.)
