The Urban Vision of Elaine Norman, an exhibit opening tonight on 1st Street

Tonight is the opening reception of a photo exhibit at City Lore on First Street titled "Apple of My Eye: The Urban Vision of Elaine Norman."

Per the City Lore website:

City Lore is pleased to present Elaine Norman’s vision of the city as the first exhibit in our Deep New York series.

“Simply strolling down any New York street can be a visual adventure and an endless opportunity for discovery,” she writes. “The City has an extraordinary capacity to blend past and present, high-brow and low, traditional and modern.”

This vibrant, eclectic and constantly evolving architectural and cultural kaleidoscope has always been Elaine Norman’s passion and source of inspiration.

The reception is 6-9 tonight. The exhibit, which spans 35 years of NYC life, is up through Oct. 15. The gallery, 56 E. First St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue, has hours of 2-6 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The man who has his butt photographed all over New York City

Jeremy Levenbach, who lived in the East Village for seven years before moving to Brooklyn, started having people take photos of his butt about two years ago.

"Just me naked from the back (no covering in the front) in a bunch of different places," he told us via email. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to get pulled off of Instagram soon. Also I have them on a Tumblr (Levenbutt). I think ... they are usually pretty well composed."

OK!

So, to ask an obvious question, why?

"It started out as a joke. I sent the original one to a bunch of friends. They liked it so I kept taking them and sending them and eventually posted them online. I think they're funny and hopefully nice to look at."

Bill Binzen's "Tenth Street"

Thanks to reader Mick for passing along this link to 12oz. Prophet that features shots from photographer Paul Binzen's book "Tenth Street." The book, published in 1968, documents life on the street from the east side to the west side.

Helen Levitt, 95

"Helen Levitt, a major photographer of the 20th century who caught fleeting moments of surpassing lyricism, mystery and quiet drama on the streets of her native New York, died in her sleep at her home in Manhattan on Sunday. She was 95." (The New York Times)
