High winds bring down a branch in Tompkins Square Park

Late this afternoon, around 5, a tree branch came crashing down inside the Ninth Street and Avenue A entrance to Tompkins Square Park. (Thanks to the reader for the above photo.) '

The branch fell about 10 feet from Derek Berg while walking with Wilfie.

He took these photos ... including after the FDNY responded to the scene...
According to the Weather Channel, New York Harbor is under a gale warning until 8 p.m. Gusts could hit 40 mph.

Tree limb down in Tompkins Square Park

For the third time in the past month, a tree branch has fallen in Tompkins Square Park.

Goggla shares this photo from this morning... showing the broken branch on the tree east of the main lawn and along the Eighth Street and Ninth Street entrances on Avenue B.

From the silver lining department, unlike the last two fallen limbs (here and here), this did not occur in an area where people would be walking, sitting, etc.

Near-miss in Tompkins Square Park as branch falls

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Tompkins Square Park, a large branch from a majestic American Elm came crashing down to the ground inside the Avenue A-St. Mark's Place entrance...
Witnesses said it came very close to hitting a man in a wheelchair (thanks to Janie Heath for the clip)...

This is the second branch to fall in the Park in recent weeks... on May 16, a young parkgoer escaped injuries after being hit by a limb that fell in the dog run — also on a calm, sunny day.

Parkgoer escapes injury after a branch falls in the Tompkins Square Park dog run

Photos by Steven

Parkgoers are buzzing about a tree limb that fell early last evening in the Tompkins Square Park dog run.

According to several witnesses, the branch struck and knocked over a young woman believed to be in her teens who was inside the dog run.

Bystanders rushed to her aid and were relieved to see she was OK. (One witness said that she was screaming, though apparently about the bugs she encountered in the fall.)
This morning, a concerned parkgoer told us: "I have been asking [the Parks Department] for years to prune the trees in the dog run. Look at the rest of the trees in the park, then look at the trees in the run, which hundreds of people sit under every day. This happened last night ... with no wind or storms."
