The Bowery is the fourth most dangerous street in Manhattan
The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a report on "the most dangerous roads for pedestrians" in the area yesterday. According to the report (via the Times), 109 pedestrians were killed on Manhattan streets from 2007-2009. In total, there were seven fatalities on the Bowery — putting it at fourth place in the city...

Saw this map in the Times last night. I know it's cruel but as I scanned the list of tragedies and saw the number of females in their twenties, I had to wonder if they were recent transplants ignoring traffic as they skipped along listening to their ipods.
Yeah, or doing their patented SATC walk-skip as they giggled drunkenly with their gal pals.
The worst types I see playing in traffic are lost B&Ters who clearly watch the Jersey Shore for fashion tips, not transplants.
The snark notwithstanding, from what I could see the vast majority of fatalities were senior citizens, not B&T ipodders. But what strikes me about the Bowery deaths is that the majority of them happened in a short 5 block stretch between Canal (Manhattan Bridge) and Delancey (Williamsburg Bridge). Rather than who died, I'd like to know who/what killed them. Big trucks perhaps??? That's a problem deserving attention.
