Another tree lost in Tompkins Square Park
Ugh. Bobby Williams reports that workers removed a tree today in Tompkins Square Park... this one close to the Avenue B/East Ninth Street entrance...

This scares me because if it's Dutch Elm Disease, then we could lose a lot more. Hope it's something else. :(
I would imagine these older trees might be a bit root bound. Can this cause damage??? and cause the trees to rot or be destroyed?? Anyone know???

Why can't we plant a tree for every one that is taken down? Is that not economically possible? If it is not is there a way citizens can start a contribution fund?

Where have you been the past several years? Never heard of the Plant a Million Trees iniative? Wake up - trees are being planted everywhere - including throughout Tompkins. Yes the loss of these grand old trees is sad - deeply sad - I grew up under them in Tompkins - but the various diseases that spread quickly from tree to tree need to be contained before we lose every last one of them. So before comenting - educate yourself. Looki into Plant a Million Trees........

Plant a million trees doesn't mean they are any being planted in Tompkins. Can someone more educated Than Last K chime in about our own park?? I have only seen trees planted once...

If it was a disease and they were chipping the tree on site- couldn't that spread the sickness?

They do parks planting as well as street trees.

This tree may have been infected with Dutch elm disease... American elms are very much targets of it. EV Grieve did a post about this in 2010 regarding other trees in Tompkins that have been infected.
