128 Second Ave. has been sold
Back in late August, a tipster told us that 128 Second Ave. between St. Mark's Place and East Seventh Street was in contract.
Per the tipster, the building was being sold "to a group of four relatively young guys" ... who were heard outside 128 "talking about 'clearing out' the shop in the front" of the building. There are two businesses here: A tattoo/piercing parlor and the Stage restaurant.
According to public documents filed at the beginning of October, the building was sold for $7.5 million. The listed buyers are LLCs... with addresses that match up to Stellar Management ("known as a premier owner and operator of commercial real estate") and Icon Realty Management.
Ikon is familiar to the East Village, as far as gut renovations and additional stories go. Among the company's recent purchases: 326-328 E. Fourth St., 205 Avenue A and 154 Second Ave.
As for the beloved Stage, we understand that they have six years remaining on their lease.

Stage is an institution: YES PLEASE to "stay."
Unfortunately we can look forward to a 5x or 10x rent hike and replacement of the Stage with a froyo shop the day the lease expires.
Unless the Republicans succeed in their quest to completely fuck the US economy, in which case gentrification might slow down a little.
Dont take the Stage it is awesome!!!!
Noooo!
I hope they tested the rooftop to make sure it's sturdy enough to hold 15 NYU coeds from Connecticut screaming out the lyrics to Bust A Move at 3:30am.
@Anon. 9:28 - Do you really think those arrogant young dudes will wait six years until the lease ends? Mark my words - they'll get a court to give them permission to break it and have that place cleared in time to participate in next year's Santacon.
Dear Stage:
You have 6 years to find a great new spot nearby. Please do!
I wonder if the Stage would consider moving, or if that's even an option in this area anymore. I can't (and don't want to) imagine life without the Stage...
Stage Shmage! Where am I going to get my tattoos and piercings in six years time?
Six years of hell for Stage. The situation would be akin to what Rory Denis is experiencing and Taylor Meade experienced -- endless construction, gut renovations, water and electricity cut-off, etc. Buyers are young (most likely from RE, internet, or venture capitalists), thus they want an immediate ROI on their investment. Stage will either get pushed out or bought out. Therefore, mo' bars, mo' dorms, mo' trendeatery.
Lemme ask a question... I moved to the EV in 1972 (!) and have just returned after an absence of some years and, of course, am in total shock/disbelief.
So I am teaching in one of the local high schools, and I am committed to ONLY eating at places that retain some of the spirit of the nabe when I was there - I usually end up at the B&H across the street from this place... Any other ideas?
And this is NOT to hijack the thread or anything I promise... just wearing out too much shoe leather trying to find places, most of which are long, long gone!!!
@ exyallie
I will make this a separate post... will be good fodder for reader input....
Stage: I have a place for you for free in Buenos Aires!!! Guillermo
Does anyone know what The Stage was in the 1920's? Was it ever a soda fountain/candy store back then? If anyone has any idea I would love to know. Thanks.
The stage resturant was a candy store in the late 40s Sam and Molly owners soda fountain as well . The tattoo store was ladies under garment wear. The Theatre was a movie house. The bank was a vacant lot until the 50s, used coal for heating.
Also in addition, after Candy/Soda Fountain store a family owned Pizza Store later on new owners renovated to Pizza/Restaurant "Then came the Stage" do not recall the year.
Anonymous 12/30/14 6:52pm, So you're saying the arrival of The Stage was the beginning of the end?
Anonymous 12/30/14 at 9:57 PM, From what I am reading it may be.....
Again, another example of NYC SBS not helping out the little guy, NYC & Company continues to not do a thing to help promote small biz shopping/tourism only if you pay over inflated dues to support their high pay salaries. And, a mayor who doesn't support small business. Someone really needs to write a story of the fraudulent Chamber of Commerce like the New York Chamber which should be shut down. It's the biggest scam going.
NBC New York reported that the Stage deli will be evicted at
the end of the month 4/30/15, the landlord discovered illegal
tampering of the gas line and meters. Con Edison was
contacted and confirmed the tampering. The Stage Deli is
located directly across the street of the 7 alarm fire on 3/26/15,
which killed 2 people, and injured about 12 others.
