We noticed that Au Breve Espresso at 51 Cooper Square closed earlier this month … for renovations…
Two weeks later, it doesn't appear that too much renovating has been happening here…
So far, there isn't any mention of the temporary closure on their website, Twitter feed (which hasn't been updated since Dec. 24) or Facebook page (last entry is from last Sept. 22).
Au Breve opened in November 2011.

I never noticed this place existed. Could it be the architect designed this building with no clue to how retail works how important a storefront is to keeping a business alive? When this building first opened it attracted homeless people in the nooks and crannies of its wacky angled structure. Skate boarders where excited to do their thing on the nutty surfaces too. The saddest building in the EV by a clueless architect.
Wouldn't shock me if they were closed for the summer; they probably do a lot of business via the NYU/Cooper Union crowds.
Pity. Guess they'll have to resort using a local coffee shop instead and give money back to the neighborhood. Hahahaha, who am I kidding, they'll go to the Astor Place Starbucks.
No biggie, there's a Dunkin' just opened up a few yards up Cooper Sq. Yay.
good riddance - the staff is condescending and totally better than you and will let you know that, even if you don't ask. I've been twice since they opened, both times I felt like I was ordering from a coffee shop in LA.
Have tried three "new" coffee places including this one. In each instance, was made to feel that only the severely hip, under 25 were truly welcome. Am thinking of printing buttons that say, "Please don't call me Sir or Ma'am" and "A Sincere Hello Goes a Long Way!"
Thankfully, we still have places where the cold shoulder doesn't run the show.
