Michael Natale, a longtime LES resident, has been keeping tabs on the trees in Tompkins Square Park for the past three years.
Back in the summer, he unveiled an updated map (above) of the Park's trees. (You can find more info at his Tompkins Trees site.)
He's now looking for some financial help to keep the project going ... and he offers an explanation in a post:
I’ve brought the map to a point where I feel it needs to be printed. But doing a professional print run is absurdly expensive. I am asking for donations from the community to support The Tompkins Trees Project. I am hoping to get enough support to be able to finance a large enough print run to make future printed maps affordable to the public.

He's going to need to update this map before printing it -- it still shows two elms in the former-bandshell area.
Our city council rep lives two blocks from the park - he should pitch this to her.
It's wonderful that someone in the neighborhood cares enough about the little bit of nature we have in the neighborhood to do this. I will make a donation to the project today.
As the first comment suggests, it is a never-catch-up situation trying to keep such a map current. For wall display, a printed map is certainly necessary. But wouldn't an updateable app be better for real on-site utility?
Actually, map makers can easily keep maps current these days thanks to digital production processes. As a small mapmaker, all he needs to do is print out maps as needed. That way, he can make updates, and he won't be stuck with outdated stock.

Michael Natale is one of the most dedicated people I have ever known. Also the most knowledgeable. Tompkins Square Park area is lucky to have him.
Kickstarter.com might be an option.
