#SaveNYC is a grassroots, crowd-sourced, D.I.Y. movement to protect and preserve the diversity and uniqueness of the urban fabric in New York City. As our vibrant streetscapes and neighborhoods are turned into bland, suburban-style shopping malls, filled with chain stores and glossy luxury retail, #SaveNYC is fighting for small businesses and cultural institutions to remain in place.
After a disaster like the deadly Second Avenue explosion and fire, impacted small businesses struggle to survive. #SaveNYC is holding a Small Biz Crawl along Second Avenue to bring customers, cash and attention to those mom-and-pops in need. This weekend, we’ll do the western side of Second Avenue; next time, the eastern side.
Meet #SaveNYC on Saturday, April 11, at noon. We’re starting at Gem Spa on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark’s Place. Buy your magazines, newspapers and egg creams at this first stop. From there, we’ll head down toward 7th Street. Do some gift shopping at Himalayan Visions. Then it’s lunch at the B&H Dairy or Paul’s Da Burger Joint. Your choice. After lunch, we’ll weave our way across the barricades of 7th Street to stock up on groceries at the New Yorkers Foodmarket. In a tweet to us yesterday, Paul's said that their business was down 75 percent since the explosion.
Other food choices on the west side of Second Avenue are Taqueria Diana and Ramen Misoya.
As for B&H, they are hopeful to be back open tomorrow.

San Marzano should be included as part of this tour. For those of you who are not aware, the owner is the same man who owned Picnic at the same location. Picnic failed miserably. The owner, Cameron, faithfully paid rent on the space all last spring and summer while shopping his lease. We met back then as I was considering taking the space for TSB. We quickly became friends. Cameron is a restaurant guy at heart and in the end , he decided to dust himself off and re-open on 2nd Avenue with a new concept. I thought he was nuts to try to make it in an already failed location , especially considering all the debt he'd accumulated paying rent on Picnic for nearly a year. Cameron is gutsy and hardworking and he beat the odds and pulled it off! That was a major accomplishment, He is also a really good guy. He deserves our support. Please visit San Marzano.

I love San Marzano but their website (as of right now) still says they're closed. Anyone have an update??

Like many others, Sushi Park was one of my favorite spots I went to at least once a week. Any recommendations for other sushi restaurants to support in the neighborhood?
Honestly, I'm as "old school east village" and anti-NYU-crowd as they come, and I want to seriously recommend Kumo Sushi over on 1st ave, for anyone looking for another awesome sushi restaurant. Don't be put off by its reputation, the food is REALLY good, and the staff is extremely prompt and polite. I know that on weekends, after around 8pm it kind of turns into a bit of a party in there (albeit an awesome one with incredible sushi and saki), but it's really low key and intimate (can be romantic) basically any other time. I've eaten at pretty much every sushi restaurant in the east village and Kumo still has my "best ever" vote.
PS I will see everyone at the cash crawl this weekend!
This doesn't seem to be very well thought-out. Buy some magazines, drink an egg cream, and have lunch? Why not expand out over a wider area, and make a larger point?
any word on San Marzano being open? will definitely go through. like the place a lot.
