Double Wide signs off after 7 years on 12th Street

Earlier this month, we noted that Greg Boehm, the founder of Cocktail Kingdom, a manufacturer and distributor of professional barware, and a partner in the cocktail bar Mace on Ninth Street and Boilermaker on First Avenue, was taking over the Double Wide space at 503-505 E. 12th St.

In the past few days the bar with a menu serving Southern-style food wrapped up its seven-year run here between Avenue A and Avenue B.

Here's their goodbye message via Facebook...

I don't know if we had anything to do with this place finally shutting down, but I want to thank my neighbors on 12th Street and 13th Street who constantly complained to the local police about the noise coming from this place. There are bars in the East Village who are good neighbors, but Doublewide was not a good neighbor. I have the circles under my eyes from years of not sleeping through the night to prove it.

I also live on 12th street and must say I will shed no tears for Double Wide. The incoming supposedly "upscale" bar please note you we will not tolerate more that kind of noise from you either. My advice DO NOT install a open facade or French doors on 12th Street, keep the front the way it is or you will have our block association on your ass.

To those who commented above, the new license does not allow the use of the outdoor space behind the bar (the "backyard"), so that should help keep much of the noise down if you live on 13th St.

Double Wide did little to nothing to keep the noise down (they couldn't even be bothered to clean up the trash directly in front of their bar. I think they took the whole "dive" concept one step too far). The new owners are looking to keep things classy, which should hopefully help. I know Mace does get loud on Friday/Saturday nights, but it's a well respected establishment. I met one of the new principals and his heart seems to be in the right place. Let's hope for a better neighbor!

Thanks to the residents who appeared at the community board meeting to testify about all the problems with Double-Wide most notably the rear yard. Thanks for all the hard work you put in over the years to point out the problems caused by Double-Wide including attending numerous CB and Precinct Council Meetings etc. Your activism convinced CB 3 to deny the license unless the new owners agreed to not use the rear yard and not have happy hour. While it takes great effort and organizing, if you put in the effort you can win, if you don't well . . .change doesn't come without hard work.

I notice they write in this Facebook post that they are sad they are "losing the space." So what's the deal? Did the landlord decide not to renew their lease?

RIP Double Wide. Good comfort foot at reasonable prices. You will be missed!

Go in Peace DW!! I've lived in alphabet city for more than 35 years and I am very sad to see DW go!!! I also live on 12th btw A and B!!! And I have to ask myself after reading some of the mostly negative comments here, At what point did this neighborhood become an oasis of quiet tranquility??? Where were all you "noise sensitive" people back in the day?? I remember what Suaer playground used to look like!!! Crackheads and junkies!!! Anybody remember the biker bar where Santa Barbra is now??? For those who say" I have to move to the suburbs for peace and quiet"?? LOOK AROUND YOU!!!!! Do you see what is happening to our community?? Small business owners are getting crushed left and right!!! Greedy ass landlords are killing this area and some want too gloat and be proud that they helped kill a business and put people out of work?? DW wasn't perfect but it was far from the 'shit show" that some describe here!!! To all of you who "won't shed any tears
'!!! I hope the next place turns out to be a speed metal club!!!!
