[Updated — now open] St. Mark's Market has not been open lately

Updated 7/4 — St. Mark's Market is back open!

Multiple readers shared the news that the 24/7 grocery at 21 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue is out of business...

This address has a storied history (you can read about it here)... the building was demolished in a mall-style upgrade in 2003, which marked the arrival of the market.

The Chipotle upstairs in the complex closed last August.

Updated 8:30 a.m.

There is a makeshift sign out front... photos via Steven...

Another reader said the space has been dark for two days. The fruit remains behind...

Updated 12:30

A worker says that the power is out (though it's on in other businesses in the complex)... and that they'd be back open ...

H/T @randeepk!

Previously on EV Grieve:
Why, yes you can live on St. Mark's Place for $19,500 a month

I love this place. I just ordered from there via Delivery.com. Maybe last week?

I'm sure that it's not the primary concern of the owners, who are just trying to figure out what to do--but what a pity that the food is left to rot instead of being donated . . .

I live above and asked the doorman yesterday why they were closed. Someone was sitting inside with the door unlocked waving people away with the lights out, so not boarded up or anything. My doorman said they had a flood (I assume he heard from our super who I assume works with St Mark's Marketplace when it comes to building issues). So it sounds like an emergency closure. That being said, even if it is an emergency closure it's scary because of the possibility they consider it easier to just shut down permanently than to clean up.

This has always been a real nice store and great source of real food and sandwiches for people who actually live/work around here. Would be a major loss if they closed.

There was an eviction notice hanging up on the door around 9AM this morning but it seems to be removed now... I hope they don't leave, I really love this market and shop there all the time :(

As a resident and business owner you may have noticed the block of St. Marks (between 2nd & 3rd Ave) has been overrun my street level drug dealers.

Amongst other spots along St. Marks, the dealers and their buyers like to congregate under the scaffolding between 19-23 St. Marks. This has significantly impacted business to St. Marks Market.

If you see this group, please support us in calling 911 and describing the individuals. Because these activities can lead to other types of crime, such as burglary, street robberies, assaults, and sometimes homicide (often between rival drug dealers over turf or failed drug deals), it is imperative that they be addressed before the activity becomes entrenched. To effectively combat the problem, police rely on observant citizens to report suspicious activity when they see it.
